Introduction: I hope to foster an encouraging environment and musical growth for students of all ages. I am always inspired by the imagination and joy students discover when they choose to make music! I am a friendly and experienced teacher. I structure lessons so that they are both fun and productive, thoughtfully building good habits of musicianship. My flexible teaching methods and positive, encouraging attitude support students of many ages and skill levels, whether just beginning or experienced, children or adults. I hold music degrees from Augustana College and Boston University, and am an active performer of music both centuries old and brand new, performing regularly with choral ensembles around the country. I teach at Music Maker Studios, a private lesson studio on the Brighton/Brookline line, founded in 1979. I've been singing ever since I can remember, and love to encourage musical growth for everyone, whether singing, piano, or a combination. It's wonderful to work with so many different people to help further their musical goals. I am always impressed by the imagination and dedication shown by students choosing to do music. I also find that teaching informs my own performing, as my performing informs my teaching!

Katie has been absolutely wonderful. From the very first lesson, she has been receptive to my particular areas of improvement and has adjusted our lessons accordingly, catering to my needs. She is both patient and understanding of the learning process, which especially shows when I've needed to be reminded of the same thing a second, third, and tenth time - she does it all with a genuine smile! She has always been quick to respond and accommodate, and she has never needed to reschedule a lesson. I feel that I have her full attention during a lesson and have never seen her having a bad day; she is always cheerful, courteous, and professional. She is mindful of where we end each lesson, so no time is ever spent on being caught up to speed. Her positive and encouraging attitude, conducive to having lessons that are both fun and productive, made them something to look forward to, and I'm certain anybody else would feel the same.

She has taken the time and attention to assess the skill level and singing technique with which I am already starting, and has challenged me well in those places I didn't even realize needed more work, correction and refinement. She also has made sure to understand what specific areas I want to improve and is building lessons around that as well. It feels personal to where I'm starting and where I want to go; it's not a cookie-cutter lesson plan. Katie is also a very kind, pleasant person and respectful of the time we have to work together each week.

I have been taking voice lessons with Katie once a week for more than two months now at the time of writing this review. In just two short months, I have noticed improvements in my overall vocal skills and I am still learning a lot from Katie. She is patient, encouraging and is a joy to work with. You do not have to have a prior interest in classical music to enjoy learning classical singing techniques from her. I find that I can always apply what I learned onto my own singing style. I am happy to have found Katie :)

It is $44/half hour, $58/45 minutes, $75/hour.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We'll meet and discuss your goals, and do a typical lesson. You may feel free to bring any music you've worked on before, if you'd like to! You'll get a sense of my style as we get to know each other, so you can make an informed decision.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I hold a Master of Music degree in Historical Performance from Boston University, and a BA in Vocal Performance and French from Augustana College in Illinois. My recent performances include the VOCES8 US Scholars, Sourcework, Red Shift Choir, the Rose Ensemble, and the Boston Camerata, as well as other concert work.
