Julie B. says, "I had a positive experience getting an outdoor light installed by Manuel. I had replaced my outdoor lights that had already been installed, but the front of my house needed a light and there was no existing outlet. It needed new wiring, and I dreaded working with electricians - you hear horror stories about how expensive it can get and people doing bad jobs. I was very happy with this experience - the price was reasonable, the drywall that needed to be cut for the new wiring was repaired and painted well so it looks as good as new and the light outside of the house looks nice. When it was first installed, I did not like the location where it was installed - they had not grabbed me when it was time to cut the hole. I contacted them after and said I really didn't like the location; it needed to be about 8 inches lower and 6 inches to the left. To Manuel's credit, he readily agreed to move it and did not try to charge me any additional money to do this. I was happy that he was flexible in this way. The scheduling was a little chaotic, with our date changing a couple of times, but I was okay with that since I work from home and this wasn't immediately urgent. I would recommend Manuel and will use him for future work."See more

Kevin C. says, "Element Properties was great to work with. We had a large living room project that they painted for us which needed several types of paint for walls, ceilings, new cabinetry and a stone fireplace. Ken and company were responsive, professional, and their price was very reasonable. They were also very flexible. Due to some construction issues on our end, we had to reschedule them several times and they were more than accommodating. We also had some issues with the surfaces of the fireplace chase and surround which required some special attention and out-of-scope work. Element Properties took care of everything and while they could have been opportunistic, they were quite reasonable when it came to the extra charges. They were meticulous in their approach, their work was fantastic, and we couldn't be happier with the result. We would definitely hire them for our next project."See more

Mark M. says, "We couldn’t be happier with the work Monroys Carpenters did on our deck and screened-in porch project. Christian and Alber did an incredible job transforming our outdated, worn-down, and honestly somewhat falling-apart deck into a functional, comfortable space that we absolutely love spending time in now. The craftsmanship and attention to detail really show in the finished product. Omar, the owner, was fantastic from start to finish. He took care of every detail, stayed extremely communicative throughout the entire project, and made sure everything ran smoothly. It’s rare to find someone so responsive and invested in making sure the customer is happy. We’re beyond pleased with the final result and would absolutely recommend Omar and his team to anyone looking to have work done. Great people, great communication, and excellent workmanship all around."See more

Jack Strollo says, "Dan with BC Custom Builders and his team were amazing to work with for our full-gut bathroom renovation. His pricing was competitive, his proposal was extremely detailed, and his team executed the project well.Dan is extremely detailed-oriented, quick and responsive to questions (I had lots), and takes significant pride in the quality of his work- a trait that is seemingly rare now. Everything from demolition, to electrical and plumbing, tiling, permitting, inspections, was handled by Dan. He is communicative on timelines, giving heads up when various subcontractors will be around, when inspections are being scheduled, etc. He even had a cleaning crew come through the house to clean up all the dust and debris that comes with a significant renovation, which was much appreciated. We would happily use BC Custom Builders again for our future remodel needs."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

It costs between $3,500 and $35,000 to frame a house. Because of the wide cost range, you should always talk to a professional to get a more accurate, personalized cost estimate. Contact framing contractors near you, and start requesting free price quotes today.

A framing contractor is an expert at creating a building’s frame, which is a vital component. It gives your building shape and structure. And a strong frame can help ensure the building’s structural integrity. In order for a major construction project to move forward, the framing must be completed.

First, search for top-rated framers near you on Thumbtack. Then, do the following:

  • Read their profiles and customer reviews.
  • Look at photos of past construction projects they’ve worked on.
  • Check to see if they are properly licensed and certified in your state.
  • Reach out to your top three framers and ask for cost estimates.

After you’ve completed this research, hire a framer you believe offers fair pricing for high-quality work. Feel free to ask them a few questions before you make your decision. For example, you can ask about their process, their references, the time it takes to complete your project and more.

You have a few options when it comes to wood for your frame, including dimensional and engineered lumber. When it comes to wood species, you could opt for:

  • Douglas fir
  • Oak
  • Pine
  • Red cedar
  • Spruce

Ask framing contractors near you what type of lumber they recommend for your house and budget.

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

On average, finish carpenters charge $60 per hour. However, this hourly rate will vary depending on where you live, the scope of the project and other factors. For a more accurate estimate, ask for price quotes from at least three finish carpenters in your area.

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.
