My walkway from the driveway to the front step had loose flagstones and missing flagstones, and the job was to fill in the cement depressions where the missing flagstones had been and to secure or remove and fill in for loose flagstones, including on the step, and also to fill in cracks. Douglas came right on time both to meet with me about an estimate and to do the job. He was very pleasant to deal with. There was no mess at all after the job was done. The repair looks like it will last a long time. One of the goals was keep snow or water from forming ice in the missing flagstones areas to avoid slipping there, and another goal was to ease shoveling by having a more even surface; shoveling after the recent snowstorm was much easier.

Hired Dan to do Fall clean up. His team was thorough and left my yard completely cleaned (no leaves or debris anywhere). I plan to hire Dan again (in Spring) to do some stone patio work and repair/replacement of my fencing. I highly recommend!

Pavemint was the right company to do my driveway. Any questions I had he was there to answer them with all honesty. He was on time when he said he was going to be at my house to do the job. Not to mention I had two other estimates from different companies telling me I needed to rip up my whole driveway, when Keith came he told me what I needed to do(honesty) and it saved me money and it looks wonderful. I would recommend pavemint to anybody that asks about getting their driveway done. Thank you for the wonderful job you and your crew have done.

It was a pleasure to work with Robert and the staff of Commonwealth Paving, a family-owned and operated business, from start to finish. Robert called when he said he would, showed up when he said he would, timed the job perfectly and delivered a quality job at a very fair price. Both Robert and his crew were professional and personable and Robert kept me informed throughout the project as to what they were doing and why. Not only did his crew take care of my flowers near the walkway they were paving, Tommy, one of the crew, went above and beyond the call of duty and did such much-needed weeding for me. I just love opening my front door and seeing my new walkway which then leads me to my beautiful new driveway. I'd say this firm sets the gold standard for paving and I highly recommend them.

I contacted Stephen after I had Terrible mess made in my basement by another company He contacted me that same day I emailed him. He called me with a quote and came when he said he said he would. My only regret is that I did not know him before I hired the other company. The mess he had to repair and how he managed to repair it was beyond my expectations . I would highly recommend him. J. I contacted this vendor to repair cracks in our foundation. They were able to provide an accurate assessment of the needed repairs. The repair was more involved than what was seen. They vendor was prepared. Once the repair was completed, my husband was very pleased. I would recommend this vendor and would hire them again.

What it was to be a simple unclogging of the sink was not. Jose came up with other solutions and got the job done. I am happy with his job and decided to have him do other repairs around the house.

We hired Eddy to repair an exterior basement wall that was leaking water during heavy rains. He showed up punctual to both the on site estimate and then the actual job. We spoke with 3 contractors and Eddy's quote was in line with the others. He also does the work himself, which we felt was a plus. We just had the first rains after the repair and did not get any water.

I was preparing my house for sale and I needed a number of repairs made to boost my sale price. I hired Mr. Paolino to rebuild and paint my front porch, repair my concrete walkway and assess and repair my roof and my chimney. All of these projects were completed on budget and within my tight time frame. They were in and out and left my property clean for my showings.

I would give Fernando a 10 star if it were available. He came when he said he would and completed the work in a timely and beautiful manner. Our house needed repairs to the brick on the front and he used his amazing skills to match the brick and mortar to the existing. He even made a couple of small additional repairs that we had not seen originally. He is extremely polite and courteous. Removed all debris and cleaned everything before leaving. I highly recommend him and would not hesitate one second to bring him back.

I hired JL Masonry to repair the front stairs of my house. Jon was prompt, professional and neat. He replaced one of the limestone treads and the bluestone on the landing. He also repointed some of the brick and repaired the walkway at no extra charge! I would definitely recommend him for your next masonry job.

Alex, Steven, and Leron (sorry if I spelled it wrong) were terrific. They did all the work Alex and I had discussed and went beyond to ensure our dodgy cracking driveway /parking lot lasted a few years longer. The guys even took out some extra asphalt that had been dumped on my lawn years ago and had just been left there. We're grateful for their help and appreciate them doing the job in a timely manner and for a reasonable cost. Thank you.

Steven of Tile Solutions retiled my powder room floor. I was very happy with how it came out. Also, he found and fixed a problem in the seal on the toilet and repaired that as well. I wouldn't hesitate to hire him again for another job.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
  • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
  • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
  • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
  • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
  • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time. When hiring a paving contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
