I have to say, i am fortunate to have found Russell when i did. Went thru 3 different attorneys within 3 years of the start of my case, and it took less than 2 months to do what they couldn't. Wish i had hired Russell sooner, but grateful i did when i did. When things were all falling apart, he helped me as quick as he could and with very good results to my satisfaction, and couldnt have been at a better time than he did. I would recommend him and his firm to anyone i know, and most certainly will hire him again if i ever need to in the future.

I dealt with Attorney Palmucci a while back, when I was having a dispute with a prior employer. Although legal action did not escalate any further than a warning letter, I had a great experience with Mr. Palmucci. He promptly responded to all my questions with intelligent, articulate advice, and I found him to be very professional. Massachusetts General Laws are not exactly material for leisure reading, nor are they remotely decipherable by the average population. Mr. Palmucci quickly interpreted the legal wording into a coherent explanation that anyone could understand. In every communication I had with him, he went above and beyond what I had even asked him for. It's clear to me he really cares about his clients, no matter how small the issue. In the end, I got exactly what I needed from my employer, and his advice was spot-on. Would definitely recommend.

This was by far the best legal experience one could hope for! Attorney Serpa was diligent in responding to my needs. When you ask him a question his responses and thoughts are expressed in a very clear and concise manner. He prevented a life changing event from negatively impacting my life. If you have any criminal issues, problems or charges or anything, you really should call Joe Serpa. He is one of the few attorneys’ that I know who will give you their cell phone number and take calls and text at any hour day or night. Thank you Joe!

I had researched attorneys in the R.I. area to help me file for bankruptcy and came across Attorney Simonian’s reviews. I was hesitant to call at first and it took me while to finally reach out. When I did it was via email and I immediately got a response from Attorney Simonian himself. I scheduled a consultation. Prior to this meeting I had to prepare documents, print stuff, complete paperwork. Attorney Simonian and his staff were very helpful during this process. Any questions I had would be answered through phone, text or email. Attorney Simonian explained everything during my consultation and answered all of my questions. He took his time and was very honest and straightforward. I received the hearing information and Attorney Simonian met me there, explained what was found to happen and before I knew it it was all over. I would recommend Attorney Simonian to anyone that’s looking for a competent and reliable attorney. As a side note the office itself is very nice and clean. Two thumbs up!!

I hired Attorney Merritt last November for a criminal defense case. It was the best decision I could have made. Steve was prompt, thorough, and professional. He got me through a very difficult time. He is now working with me on a family situation. This is a much slower process I am being kept up to date as necessary. By the way, Kristin is awesome, too.

I'll let you be the judge of Attorney Bombay, here's how my agreement for the Job with him went: I extended my need for a contract out to thumbtack.com for an upcoming business venture with another party. Jeremy was the first to respond to me and quoted me at $175 an hour, please see 'Bombard1' for the snippet of the conversation. Thinking this was a reasonable price, I agree to hire Jeremy for the contract. I then get sent a 'Fee Agreement' which has a clause that the 'Client agrees to pay $500 as an initial retainer', please see attached 'Bombard2' picture. Puzzled by this, I asked Jeremy for clarification and what the $500 fee was for. I was told that the initial consultation was not charged, and after that the $500 retainer would be applied to any outstanding balance. Please see 'Bombard 3' attached screen shot. Still thinking this is ludicrous, I went along thinking the $500 would be the cost of the whole thing. Not a great price at all, but at this point I really just needed the contract done. Jeremy calls me up on Memorial Day to get some information about what's needed in the contract. Says he should have something by the end of the week, I say no rush as my other party joining this is in the middle of a move herself and to just let me know when it's completed. Get another email from Jeremy asking for clarification for a few things, and then finally I'm hit with a $437.50 charge for Jeremy's time on this contract. This is where things get infuriating, as I spoke to several lawyers in the meantime whom informed me something like this should take an hour or two tops to make. Price all in should be around $250-$300 max. As you can see with these pictures, I ended up paying $937.50 after being quoted $175 an hour for the job. If we take Jeremy's original offer, he supposedly took 5 and a half hours to write this contract that he ended up giving me 3 weeks late. The icing on the cake is I was let go from my employer yesterday and am looking into legal matters for unpaid overtime this past winter. Jeremy informs me he does not handle termination suits, but refers me to his buddy who would 'Take good care of me'. After an initial half hour on the phone with his 'buddy' attorney, I'm quoted at $300 an hour for the job, told I probably don't have a case at all but should start writing a 'Demand Letter' and send it to him for his approval. Oh and just so I knew, Jeremy would likely be getting some piece of the supposedly tough to get the upcoming payout for a referral. Instantly declined this lawyer's service and said I do not want to move forward with him, then thought it would be best to share my experience with Bombard Law for anyone whom is considering hiring Jeremy for their legal needs.

Rachel helped me through a contested property division process. The division of property - occurring some 13 years after the divorce itself - was opposed by my ex, who wanted to disregard the Settlement Agreement. Rachel was wonderful in her grasp of the situation, in explaining the options available, and then guiding me through the Court proceeding itself. I cannot help but believe that if Rachel had been my original divorce attorney I would never have been in the situation I found myself in. Smarts, warmth, and a sense of humor and perspective - quite a winning combination!

I had been in a tenant/landlord lawsuit for months-- horrible and costly-- and was referred to Paul when my attorney suffered a family crisis. Paul took on my case and all the attorney's other cases, in addition to his own pending cases. It took him ONE day to resolve my conflict and let me move on with my life. I wish, wish, wish I had met him sooner, but I know that I can be saved again, any time I need, by calling him first!

I was in a very serious car accident and fractured my femur. I needed two surgeries and was in a wheelchair for 2 months. In all, my recovery took about a year and a half. I hired the law offices Joel H. Schwartz and they were terrific. It was an extremely scary time for me, and I am so glad I had these guys to help me through it. They were not only my lawyers, but my therapists as well! They give you so much confidence that you know everything is being taken care of properly. The 2 year process was great, and my compensation for all I went through was more than I expected. I would recommend this firm in a heartbeat to anyone hurt in an accident. They are honest and will work hard for you.

Melanie Soloman became my divorce attorney and instantly a weight came off my shoulders. The stress of raising 2 children with child support in the arrears too much to say, I felt as though the 3 of us where a joke to the other party. I felt lost in life. Melanie Soloman answered all my questions willingly, truthfully, and somehow made sense of it all. Absolutely by far Melanie Soloman is exactly the lawyer I needed back in 2010. Prompt, factual, trustworthy and just a superb divorce lawyer for a custody case. I am absolutely amazed at how well things are turning out. I am ABSOLUTELY confident that if I ever need her again she will fight for me and my family once again.

Attorney Shawn Sweeney defended me in a simple assault charge in Milford, NH. I am very pleased with the out come of my case. Attorney Sweeney was very professional and thorough keeping me informed during the 5 months my case was pending. Shawn Sweeney explained in great detail all aspects of my case and the law. Standing in front of a judge and having a prosecutor explain the charges against me, was very intimidating but having attorney Shawn Sweeney by my side to defend me, gave me a great sense of comfort and assurance that my interests where being protected. I would highly recommend attorney Shawn Sweeney.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does an immigration attorney do?

Immigration lawyers help their clients through all phases of the immigration process. Experts on immigration law, they are legally qualified to represent U.S. citizens, permanent residents or undocumented immigrants. Immigration lawyers also provide assistance to visitors here on student, work or travel visas, and can represent clients who may have an expired visa or who have overstayed their visa.

You can hire an immigration lawyer to assist you with petitioning for renewing a permanent resident or green card, navigating the naturalization process, submitting an employee-based petition for a work visa, filing a petition for a family member, or representing you or a loved one who is facing detention or deportation, as well as replacing, extending or changing a current visa, green card or work permit. The immigration process is highly complex, with multiple hearings, paperwork and requirements. Hiring a legal expert to represent you can help you make your best effort in the process. When researching immigration lawyers, it is very important to verify their qualifications and find a reputable attorney. Read reviews and verify that the immigration lawyer is licensed by your state before paying any fees.

What is a personal injury lawyer?

A personal injury lawyer fights on your behalf if you’ve been injured physically, psychologically, economically or in reputation. This injury may be the result of neglect or malicious intent of another person, or it could be at the hands of a business, government or other entity. Personal injury lawyers specialize in tort law, which is the law of civil wrongs like car accidents, company wrongdoing, unlawful imprisonment and more.

To become qualified to be a personal injury lawyer in the United States, a person must earn a bachelor’s degree, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from a law school. Most states then require the person to pass the bar exam to become licensed to practice law. Unlike many attorneys who require a retainer, personal injury lawyers often work on contingency fees. This means that in lieu of payment upfront, they receive an agreed-upon percentage of the settlement in case of a win.

What should you look for in a personal injury lawyer?

A personal injury lawyer will advocate for your legal rights if you’ve been hurt in an accident at work or in daily life, have suffered from medical malpractice, or are struggling to have your insurance carrier cover your needs. It may be helpful to talk with two or three lawyers before selecting one. When looking for a personal injury lawyer, research their reviews and make sure former clients have had good experiences with them. Next, make sure the personal injury lawyer has experience and proven success winning cases similar to yours. Confirm that the lawyer is licensed to provide services in your state. When you find a qualified personal injury lawyer with whom you want to work, freely discuss payment and fees before any work begins. Most lawyers offer a free consultation to learn what your case is about and explain their rates. Personal injury attorneys typically receive a percentage of your settlement (called a contingency fee), so they are paid after the trial or case is complete. Keep in mind that some attorneys have fees that you must pay even if you don’t win your trial. It’s important to understand these details before work begins so you don’t have any unhappy surprises later. Lastly, it’s wise to choose a personal injury lawyer that you have confidence in and with whom you can communicate openly and honestly.

How do you find a good immigration lawyer?

Research is key to finding a good immigration lawyer. The immigration process can be overwhelming and complex, so a trustworthy advocate is critical. When you have identified several eligible candidates, verify their immigration law license to protect yourself and your finances. Once you have a set of licensed immigration lawyers in mind, choose one based on these considerations:

    • Mutual respect: You want an immigration lawyer who treats you and your family with kindness and consideration. You’ll do the same for them.
    • Availability: Before hiring, note if they have responded promptly to your emails and calls. You don’t want to hire someone you have to chase around.
    • Proven success: Read former client reviews and research their success rate with cases similar to yours.
    • Transparent rates: Ask directly about what their rates are, how they bill, and what they estimate your legal fees will be. Ask if they will sign a fee agreement, and get receipts for all fees paid.
    • Verify who will handle your case: Sometimes junior lawyers work on firm cases. This is okay, as long as you have discussed it and are comfortable with it. When junior lawyers or paralegals are working on your case, ask if the hourly rate is lower.
    • Be wary of anyone who promises you specific results: No case is certain, and the immigration lawyer should be honest about what you can expect.

How much does an immigration lawyer cost?

Immigration lawyers are experts in the nuances of the highly complex United States immigration system. They help clients of all backgrounds petition for immigration status and become U.S. citizens, and can represent clients who are facing deportation or detention. Nationally, the cost people pay for immigration lawyers averages $500-$1,010. The services you need will have a huge effect on your costs. For routines cases, such as applying for a travel visa, an immigration lawyer may be able to confidently quote you a set price, while more open-ended cases may be billed at an hourly rate of $200-$500, or more, depending on the reputation and experience of the firm and lawyer. Before hiring an immigration lawyer, ask what their plan for your case is and what expected costs may be. Many immigration lawyers work from retainers, and request a set amount of money upfront from which to work. For example, a lawyer who charges $300 per hour may estimate $4,000 for a standard family-based immigration case, the common process in which a U.S. citizen petitions for permanent residency for their spouse, fiancee or family members.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
