FAQs
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Of course I follow all the latest arguments between the descriptionists and prescriptionists... bedtime reading! I am currently learning to create my own custom macros for improving the usefulness of my computer for editing. It really can increase both the speed and accuracy of your editing to automate some of the repetitive material.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
This line of work sneaked up on me. I started with web coding - writing code for custom web-based data management systems. On almost every project, however, I found that I needed to spend a significant amount of time restructuring, reorganizing, and flat out rewriting content provided for the site copy. Not always, but often. I realized that I enjoyed this part of the project often more than working with the code and data. So I started studying traditional copyediting methods and have shifted into editing.
- What types of customers have you worked with?
Most commonly, I read through web content and create an outline for clear navigational organization. Then, I read the material as a copyeditor, carefully making corrections and suggestions to improve the readability of the copy. The main purpose of my work is to make the content more understandable, more logical, and more approachable to the intended audience.
