Introduction: I have been tutoring math and writing since I began in high school, teaching my friend's younger brother algebra. I fell in love with teaching and found I could always explain concepts in a way that clicked with the student. After graduating from Middlebury College in 2016 with a degree in neuroscience, I worked at Tahoe Tutoring in Incline Village, NV, learning teaching techniques from my experienced supervisors. After gaining much experience teaching math and writing as well as leading small SAT and ACT classes, I decided to start my own business, Fathom Academics. I have been helping students succeed in their core classes, master the SAT and ACT, and write transportive essays ever since! When it comes to teaching, I employ my neuroscientific understanding of learning and cognition every time I teach: I emphasize thorough conceptual understanding over formulaic memorization and tailor each session to the student's learning style. With thorough conceptual understanding and mastery over fundamentals, success is a walk in the park! In regard to writing, I learned from renowned college counselor Keith Berman at Options for College that students must write anectodal essays that transport readers into their experience for the best result. The purpose of the application essay is to demonstrate the student's personality and character traits. All too many students make the mistake of submitting a reformatting of their resume for their essay. When I work with students, we convey a compelling anecdotal story from the student's life with clear, vivid language to transport the reader into the experience of the student so they can experience first-hand what it feels like to be the student.

Rob has been able to help both my daughters excel in their High School AP classes. My one daughter travels for Ski Racing often and he has been able to fill in any gaps that she misses while traveling. We will definitely be using Rob to help with the college application process.

Fathom Academics provided our daughter Olivia with the guidance and support that she needed during the most important and stressful part of her college application process. They took the time to truly understand her as a student and as a person and then patiently helped her craft genuine, authentic personal statements and essays for her applications. Olivia is now a freshman at UCLA and we will forever be grateful to Fathom Academics for the critical role that they played in her successful college application process. Thank you Rob and Fathom!

I very much enjoyed working with Rob, I had a great time and learned a lot. He had me chose a few songs I liked and slowly dissected them. He taught me how to play them and explained the function of each chord. He's an experienced musician and tutor who's passionate about his job but mainly a big music lover. Highly Recommend

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

For tutoring and test-prep I charge $80/hr for in-person sessions and $60/hr for online sessions. For college application essay counseling I charge $120/hr for in-person sessions and $100/hr for online sessions.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

When it comes to tutoring, we dive right into the student's work and I quickly assess what understanding or skills the student is lacking. From there, I break down concepts and teach new information in a manner tailored to the student's personality and learning style. For college application essay counseling, the student and I brainstorm events from the student's life to outline an anecdotal story that demonstrates the student's best characteristics. Then we edit the language to make sure it is clear and powerful and transports the reader into the experience of the student.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

In regard to tutoring, I have been tutoring math and writing since I was in high school. I graduated with a liberal arts degree with a focus on neuroscience and writing. I worked for one year with Tahoe Tutoring, a tutoring company in Incline Village, Nevada, before starting my own independent business. I have been enjoying tutoring and essay counseling independently ever since, now 4 years!
