Jorge and his team did an amazing job of our house (Drywall Installation, hallway and bathroom install marble tile and kitchen cabinet etc). They are incredible, meticulous, punctual, very nice to work with and do a wonderful job. They clean up at the end of every day you would never know they were there. I HIGHLY recommend their work. Jorge's team is by far the best. He is also extremely reasonable. Additionally, he insisted we call if we find ANYTHING we are unhappy with so he can take care of it immediately. So I wouldn’t hesitate to call him again.

John is very accommodation and made everything look good under a budget while meeting and exceeding my expectations! The job wasn't easy, he had to repair mistakes made by previous contractors. New sub floors and flooring, trim, cabinets, drywall and repairs, plumbing of the toilet and sinks and vanities. It's a very old apt and nothing is square or even but he made it look fresh and new!

We received several estimates for work in our master bath (full re-grout, tile repair and toilet replacement), kitchen (faucet replace in granite counter) and addition of a ceiling fan in the home office. Tommy was quick to respond, able to provide us with a firm scheduling date that met our needs, and provided the most fair price for the work requested. More importantly, his work in all phases was excellent. He worked nonstop for two days on the projects that others estimated would take three or more to complete. He was also both personable and professional and communicated with us effectively throughout the process. I will gladly recommend him to our friends and neighbors.

We hired Steve to install rough plumbing, a tub, shower door, and drywall and to skim coat 2 textured ceilings to make them smooth. We really appreciated Steve's transparency in his quote, as well as his quality and speed of work. Steve gave us a fair and detailed quote including expected time to finish. Steve and the guys he brought with him worked quickly without compromising quality. We are happy to be hiring Steve to do more work at our house later in the summer.

I had asked Dan to come out and look at replacing some siding on a chimney. He stopped by the next day and gave me some other money saving options that would still look nice. As soon as weather permitted, Dan was here working hard on the chimney. He also had to do some repair to the masonry, which he did nicely. Will definitely keep him in mind for future projects!

I had quite the punch list to ready a rental property to be shown. Not only did Marty meet me immediately to review the scope of work, he had a quote turned around within 24 hours. Marty and his team worked in an organized fashion, around existing tenants, to make quick work replacing molding, repairing electrical fixtures, and installing pre-hung doors. Mary and his son come highly recommended, and we will be using them again.

I have only positive statements about all aspects of Dan's work for us. He was prompt in communicating. He arrived on time. One part of the project (replacing ceiling tiles) became more complicated after he removed the old ones. His work was meticulous and my ceiling looks beautiful. He replaced sections of drywall and the taping looks great. In addition, he's a really nice guy. I plan on using him for future projects.

When Nick gets into a project he is a "ninja". His work is clean, professional and precise. He has done a variety of projects for us, but the one with which I was most impressed was when he replaced the corner of a structure attached to our house. The corner was rotted from water damage and he was able to repair it and reuse the vinyl siding we have so that you wouldn't know anything had been done there. Nice!

Jake responded to my request within an hour, showed up on time to review the work that needed to be done on my Andersen Window. He was pleasant, personable and respectful of our home. He determined what we needed ordered the part and completed the repair within a couple of days. He showed up on time, went right to work and completed the work quickly. Once again, taking great care not to soil our carpets or window dressings. If I have any other household projects that need to be taken care of, I will contact him first. Great Job!

Painted exterior house- 2 unit building- excellent job! Many compliments! All work was timely and quality job with everything- like garage roof repair, and brickwork. This was my first time using thumbtack, and I had a lot of quotes. Jeff was very professional, walked through the scope of work to be done, wrote out a contract and did everything he said he was going to do, very timely, reasonable pricing, reliable crew, and good quality work. I plan to use him again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
