Introduction: I find the areas the student needs to work on the most to become a well-rounded bass player. I teach music theory and ear training along with the technical aspect of playing the bass to show the student what is happening with the notes and why it's happening. This creates a truly complete bass player who is ready for any gig or session. Being an educator and helping people learn the bass is something that drives me to be better. Watching my students find the "ah-HA!" moment is a joy for me. Music has changed my life and teaching others to find the same thrill is my passion.

I wanted to play bass in a band, and had some previous knowledge of piano. I contacted Hugh about lessons, and we worked from there, bringing me from essentially ground zero to now, where I'm gigging with a group on a regular basis. Hugh also invited me to see him perform with his group, Miss Fairchild, and it's obvious that he's a master of the instrument. It gives me a lot to look forward to, and to desire to work hard for. One of the best parts about studying with Hugh is that he is personable. A lot of music teachers, in my experience, can kind of have a weird vibe, but Hugh is funny and cool. I'd recommend him to anyone.

My son wanted to take bass lessons and after a quick google search I found Mr. Gilmore's website. His rates are reasonable and his resume is solid. My son really loves his patient teaching style and is quickly taking to the basics of both playing and music theory. I would highly recommend Hugh to anyone looking for a professional, patient and knowledgable teacher.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My standard pricing is $50/hr, $30/half hr. If the student prefers to come to my home, I offer a discount. Please get in touch with any specific questions!
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I like to get to know my student and find out what they're trying to get out of learning music. I've had students who are just starting, some who are older and want to keep playing music as a hobby, and some who are professional musicians wanting to learn more. Once I understand their hopes and skill level, I can make a plan to get my student on the path to achieving their goals.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I've played music since I was 5 years old, starting on piano, then moving to percussion, and finally bass. I had private teachers through school in addition to being very active in my school music program. I completed my BM in Acoustic Bass Performance from Berklee College of Music a few years ago and have been playing professionally ever since.
