- How did you get started doing this type of work?
My husband and I have raised three great kids of our own, but we certainly dealt with our share of issues along the way! As a school library teacher, I saw every kid in the school, and helped with every subject. My goal was to impart at least some piece of excitement about learning (not just grades) to all of the kids I taught. But I also recognized that young people are struggling with so many things. Not just academics, but also personally, in their relationships with others, and even with themselves. When one of the students in our school took his own life a few years ago, I decided that I needed to have a greater impact on how kids grow up, become adults, and join society. I wanted to be able to help them clarify their purpose and meaning in life, so that they weren't just wandering aimlessly from day to day (TOO MANY kids are like this). So I began training to be a family and life coach, knowing that if I can give parents the strategies and skills they need to be great parents, they can then raise great kids who are happy, and successful over the long term. As part of this program, I tutor kids (and adults!) in research and writing, in the college search process - including writing the college essays - and in creating and giving presentations that communicate your message effectively.
