Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: I am a private instructor with over 25 years' teaching experience. I worked with hundreds of students on topics ranging from basic snare drum and percussion studies to advanced stylistic development on the drumset. My teaching range includes jazz, rock, R&B, funk, Latin, and blues styles. I keep an extensive library of teaching and reference materials for my students’ benefit. In 2006, I published a drumset instruction book specifically for beginning students, Building a Drumset Vocabulary. My teaching philosophy is to equip each student with proper percussion methods, and to assist each student to develop a unique musical style within his or her capabilities. In other words, working from an established and effective basic curriculum, I tailor lessons to suit the aspirations and needs of each individual student. As an instructor, I try to create a fun, relaxing learning environment in which each student can reach his or her full potential as a drummer and music lover. I offer instruction in reading skills, proper hand and foot technique, drumming styles, and chart reading, as well as drum fills, soloing, building speed and control, and working with a click track. Several of my young students have gone on to top music programs at Berklee and other colleges, and some like Tim Molloy of Our Last Night, Luc Laurent of Pepper Rabbit, and Nick Letizio have become professional musicians in their own right. I am also an active performer, with extensive local and national experience. My drum studio includes two complete drumsets, a practice pad and mirror for hand technique, a complete sound system for listen-and-play-along, and a digital recording system to record lessons and provide students CDs for practice and for sharing their performances.

Rick is exactly the person I've waited 43 years to meet. He's an excellent teacher-coach on the drums, has a great studio and thoroughly enjoys life (sayin' this after two one-hour lessons...).

Rick is a drum instructor, and I've been taking weekly, hour-long lessons with him for 6 months. After trying out a few instructors in Boston who had no methodology, no go-to books, no handouts, and generally no system or materials for teaching, I found Rick via much googling. Rick is a Berklee trained, practicing musician & drum instructor. His facilities are great: a treated room with 2 side-by-side kits, 2 practice pads, metronomes, etc. Rick has an endless supply of ideas, handouts, and also, a great book (that he authored) that's kept me busy for longer than any other books I've worked with (this is a good thing). He teaches in local schools, as well as private lessons, and I'm glad to have found an instructor that's thinking about drumming & instruction at the professional level he's engaged in. I enjoy Rick on a personal level (I'm near him in age), but would consider him a good role model for kids, showing patience & flexibility in his approach, as well as espousing a strong work ethic.

Rick's job wasn't easy... I'm a self-taught drummer, playing by ear and developing years of bad habits. I didn't know what I didn't know. Rick first had to figure out how to teach me, which wasn't easy, but was able to quickly identify strengths and weaknesses and gave me drills and tips to improve technique, timing and speed. His studio and setup is perfect, whether playing to music or recording, and I took something valuable from each and every lesson. And he's a good guy and fantastic drummer to boot. I highly recommend him.

I have been studying with Rick for close to 3 years. I have always found him to be professional and tailoring the lesson plan to my needs and desires. Drumming is a great outlet for me. I am not an aspiring professional, just someone who enjoys all kinds of music and loves the drums. I drive an hour to reach his studio for lessons. I would not do so if he were not such a great teacher.

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a B.A. from Berklee College of Music. I stay current on all teaching and performance trends. I attend drum clinic as well as teaching clinics. I'm also performer, which helps me relate ideas to a student about what is needed to be a working musician, if that is what interests them.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

As a professional musician, I take teaching music seriously. I make a focused effort with each student to be productive at every lesson, and I ask you to make the same commitment. This means coming to lessons prepared and ready to focus on our material, ask questions, and listen to the answers. Any good teaching relationship is a shared learning experience. For my part, I get to know each student’s aptitudes, interests, and aspirations, and I work to provide lessons, material, and assessments to meet each student’s unique capabilities and needs. Working together, you and I will develop your ability to understand, enjoy, and play music. As your abilities progress, you will find lessons more and more enjoyable and you will gain pride and confidence in your skills.
