Introduction: We play traditional jazz, blues, ballads and swing. The Not-So-Modern Jazz Quartet Plus is a band playing in the club scene of the '20s, '30s and '40s. It loyally replicates this music with top local jazz musicians, and has been playing constantly since 1983. The basic quartet is made up of piano, bass, drums, and clarinet. When a piano is not available, the quartet swaps a rhythm guitar. We usually play with 5 or more musicians, especially when playing Dixieland, thus the "plus" in the band's name. The musicians depend a great deal on their improvisation skills, and the band has an extremely huge book of traditional Dixieland, old standards, and swing era tunes. The music of Duke Ellington, Fats Waller and Benny Goodman are the repertoire showpieces of the combo, along with the Great American song books. We play regularly at the Westlawn Inn (second Saturday of the month) and at St. Elmo's Coffee Pub (every Thursday). We are available for other regular gigs and scheduled affairs, like weddings, parties, public events, dances, and New Orleans style jazz funerals. We are celebrating our 38th year as a regularly playing band.
