Ask for professional references, including students/student parents, music colleagues, school colleagues, and/or past teachers. Does the teacher care about the individual needs of students? Does the teacher tailor instruction for each age group? How does the teacher get results from students? Does the teacher simply have students play pieces or is he/she teaching other skills (such as practicing, studying, focusing, reading, verbal and written communication...) through music? These are all things to keep in mind.
