- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
VOICE: I usually have the students sing any song of their choice (most common are happy birthday, mary had a little lamb, twinkle twinkle and, Let it go) After that I typically do some technique training to show them how little things like correct posture and breathing can change the song in such huge ways. Then from there I train them working specific muscles to get the results that will last a lifetime. Intercostal and outercostal muscles as well as diaphraphm PIANO: I usually have them show me what they know or explain previous experience, then we work from there. I will sometimes ask my students to prepare a piano piece for me to hear so I can look at technique and posture. I might give a sightreading test if they have had lessons before. (just so I can see what needs to be worked on)
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
As a teacher I am required to continue my education, otherwise I lose my degree. Unlike people with just a voice or piano degree, they are not required to take classes. I have a music education degree that focuses on voice and piano, however, I am certified to teach any instrument. I had to have 3 majors in order to graduate with a music education degree. I have to major in Voice, Piano, and Education. What this does, is it allows me to actually teach music as opposed to perform it. Most voice and piano teachers have a degree in voice or piano, which means they are certified to perform music, not teach it. They usually take up teaching as a past time because it is hard to make a career of performing. However, they are technically not certified to teach their subject.
