Introduction: Finding a tax preparer who knows the whole tax code off the top of his head is like trying to find an attorney that knows the whole legal code off the top of his head---it's not going to happen. I am not afraid to admit when I run into a tax scenario that I am not familiar with and don't just guess at what is legal to look smart in front of my customers. I take the time to research the scenario so that I may file a correct return for my customers so if they are ever audited, they have nothing to worry about. I find my job fulfilling for a couple of different reasons. First and foremost, I have the opportunity of making a person's day! When you are able to tell someone, particularly someone with a low income, that they will be getting back thousands of dollars for their refund, it makes them happy. I've had clients get teary-eyed after telling them how much they will be getting back. This really makes me feel good and gives me an intrinsic sense of satisfaction that I could not get at a traditional job. Secondly, I like this profession because it challenges me. I always need to be reading and keeping up-to-date on the latest tax code changes. This is not a profession where you can just turn your brain off and go into hibernation-mode, like I did in past jobs I've held.
