Introduction
Finding a tax preparer who knows the whole tax code off the top of his head is like trying to find an attorney that knows the whole legal code off the top of his head---it's not going to happen. I am not afraid to admit when I run into a tax scenario that I am not familiar with and don't just guess at what is legal to look smart in front of my customers. I take the time to research the scenario so that I may file a correct return for my customers so if they are ever audited, they have nothing to worry about. I find my job fulfilling for a couple of different reasons. First and foremost, I have the opportunity of making a person's day! When you are able to tell someone, particularly someone with a low income, that they will be getting back thousands of dollars for their refund, it makes them happy. I've had clients get teary-eyed after telling them how much they will be getting back. This really makes me feel good and gives me an intrinsic sense of satisfaction that I could not get at a traditional job. Secondly, I like this profession because it challenges me. I always need to be reading and keeping up-to-date on the latest tax code changes. This is not a profession where you can just turn your brain off and go into hibernation-mode, like I did in past jobs I've held.

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Yes, as an Enrolled Agent I am required by the IRS to complete 24 hours of continuing education each year.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Be careful to watch for marketing scams. Many tax offices like to be vague about how much it will actually cost you to get your taxes done until you come in and go through your whole return with a tax preparer. They figure that the average customer will pay whatever amount is thrown at them after sitting with the preparer for an hour going through their return. Its usually easier for a customer to just pay the extra hundred or so dollars than going to some other office and going through their whole return again. At our office, your individual taxes or $99 or less---period.
