FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I give family, sibling, and group discounts. My student and l plan out one calendar month of lessons in advance and payment for that month is expected by the first lesson of the month. I have also been known to "trade" for work or other types of lessons for my family --maybe you have a skill to share. Books and other materials are acquired and purchased from me. Typically students spend $30-50 on materials a year. Cancellation policy: If a student calls (leaving a voicemail is acceptable) or emails to cancel by 7 pm the evening before, I will not charge and will credit towards the next month. If not, the lesson fee will be collected. Reasonable attempts will be made for a make-up lesson. The only exception to this policy is unsafe weather conditions. If you do not feel safe traveling due to the weather, you must call or email before the lesson start time, and I will waive the lesson fee. Please remember that I do not follow along with school schedules or closures.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Students and teachers need to get to know one another and I prefer to also get to know family members who will be supporting the student in their lessons and practice. For this reason, I offer an initial phone consultation as well as a studio meeting and mini-lesson for free. From there I craft a lesson plan and goals for success that fit the student's needs and desires. I am also available to assist in locating and selecting an instrument appropriate for the student. Your instrument is an important purchase, and will factor in your success and enjoyment as a musician. I will also advise you and make recommendations as to the upkeep of your instrument.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I was very fortunate to be raised in a musical household. I thought of the piano as an appliance we had the privilege to learn to use as we matured, like a toaster or the stove! I learned to play and sing as I learned to speak, and I learned to read music as I learned to read English. It was a natural process alongside my family. This wonderful start lead to many years of training and eventually to my career.
