Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best way to remove wallpaper?

There are several proven methods for wallpaper removal; each has its pros and cons, but some are definitely easier. Peeling is usually the least painful, followed by soaking and stripping. Dry-stripping is the next most time-consuming, and steaming the most work. The average wallpaper removal job costs between $360 and $560. The method of removal can affect the cost, as steaming takes longer than peeling and will therefore typically cost more. Peeling wallpaper off is usually the quickest method. To see if your wallpaper can be peeled off, try gently edging up a corner and carefully peeling the paper off the wall in strips. If you can’t peel, then you’ll have to score and strip it, either by dry-stripping or by soaking and then stripping. Plaster walls can withstand moisture and can stand up to soaking and stripping, but drywall should not be soaked. For very stubborn wallpaper, steaming may be necessary, which is time-consuming but effective. If you prefer not to attempt these methods yourself, wallpaper removal pros have the proper tools and experience to quickly take down wallpaper and also repair any damage to your walls.

Is it OK to paint over wallpaper?

You can paint over wallpaper that’s in good condition and isn’t at risk of coming off the wall. This technique is particularly useful for those who don’t have the time or inclination to remove all the wallpaper in a room. Consider hiring an interior painter if you’ve never painted over wallpaper.

How much does it cost to remove wallpaper in a room?

The national wallpaper removal cost averages $360-$560, which will typically include multiple rooms. Pros often charge by the square foot to remove egregious wallpaper that is long past its prime. Wallpaper removal cost may range anywhere from 60 cents to $1.50 or more per square foot. A pro may estimate removal costs ranging between $160 and $300 for a medium-sized room. Costs can vary due to ceiling height, and some pros add a skim coat to make repainting or re-papering smoother. Here are some examples of average costs to remove wallpaper:

  • Foyer: 36-120 square feet, $21.60-$180.
  • Powder room: 16-36 square feet, $9.60-$54.
  • Living or dining room: 120-252 square feet, $72-$378.
  • Family room: 192-384 square feet, $115.20-$576.
  • Bedroom: 100-224 square feet, $60-$336.
  • Guest bath: 45-84 square feet, $27-$126.
  • Master bedroom: 168-384 square feet, $100.80-$576.
  • Master bath: 54-160 square feet, $32.40-$240.

Once the old wallpaper is gone, the average cost to install new wallpaper is $240-$350.

Reviews for Crystal wallpaper removal professionals

Kayla was very professional and efficient. Our house required removing old wallpaper, which others had attempted and left quite a mess. Kayla was able to remove all the wallpaper and repair the wallboard. Her painting skills were excellent as well as her help in deciding colors and brands of paint. We had many small patch-ups jobs that needed repair as well as the re-paint of the kitchen. Everything was done very well and we are very satisfied. We would highly recommend Kayla to others. We hired Kayla to remove the wallpaper in our bathroom and then paint it. She came to do the job with a gel product but wasn't able to remove the paper with that product so purchased a steamer. The steamer removed the drywall and did more damage than good, so she didn't get far with that. We shared with Kayla how we successfully removed the wallpaper from another room (it was all installed by the original builder so odds were, rooms had same type of wallpaper), which involved scoring the paper really well, drenching it in DIF, let it soak, then peel away the top layer. Soak it again and the under layer comes off. She scored a section of one of the walls but couldn't get it off. Then she spackled over everything she had scored, and all the areas of missing drywall, and recommended we paint over the wallpaper. It took her about 8 hours to realize she couldn't remove the paper, and the walls were now in worse condition then they had been. After that recommendation, I tried our method of scoring & DIF and it worked. I told her this, and she explained she was allergic to DIF. We ended her services at that point. We were going to do her suggested method of painting over the wallpaper but couldn't sand down the scored wall paper or other sections well enough to feel that it wouldn't show through painting. So, I removed all the wallpaper myself. It was slow and painful but it was do-able even for a non-professional. I can't speak to her painting abilities. I was most frustrated with her inability to quickly identify how to remove the paper, and by the additional damage she caused to the walls. I also felt she didn't come prepared to do the job - knowing wallpaper is a bit of an unknown in how well it'll come off, she came with a single product and couldn't properly use a steamer. I've never used a steamer so I have no idea if it was her fault or the steamers. It cost us more time and money to do an already time consuming job than it would have had we not hired her.

The team was excellent to work with! They were on time, warm, and did great work removing all wallpaper then painting our house from top to bottom. The value for the volume of work was just right for us. I would use their services again and I recommend them to anyone looking for quality and stellar customer service!
