FAQs
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
All it takes for a pro likme me is to read an article or two and whatever "new" technology is out I will understand. This is because "new" technology is not so different but just a bit faster, like USB-3. The voltages are a little bit higher and the data rate is about ten times faster than USB-2. The big changes are this: Operating Systems such as Windows 8 or Mac 10.10. Going for the newest system is what you do when you want more headaches or you got stuck with it when you bought a new computer and it has the new system by default. Avoid new systems. They are all buggy. Apple's 10.9 (Mavericks) had several updates: 10.9.1, 10.9.2 etc. to 10.9.5, plus security updates. Each release was a bug fix.Once a release becomes 10.X.3 or higher, it is becoming stable and mature. With Apple, grab their updates as fast as you can get them. With Windows, wait and check around to see if the updates cause more trouble. Some old software will not work with a new system and needs to be updated, and that can cost you. Is it worth it to have the new system? Early adopters of systems run into the trouble that I have mentioned. They may make claims to the contrary yet I fix their systems and see the problems. Be careful with new systems. If it works, don't fix it.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I started by helping a kid many years ago. I liked fixing something that won't go nuts again due to bad design (such as MS junk).
- Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
DIagnosed a bad hard drive enclosure with a client in Baltimore just days ago. He knows nothing about computers and still calls me even though I moved away more than two years ago. Also got him the part number for a replacecement enclosure.
