Chapter 7 bankruptcy, or liquidation, is the most common type of bankruptcy. In a Chapter 7 liquidation, a court-appointed trustee sells some of your assets to pay your debts. At the end of the process, the Bankruptcy Court discharges, or wipes away, most or all of your remaining debts. Chapter 13 bankruptcy, often referred to as a wage earner's plan, is most commonly used by those whose incomes are too high to qualify for Chapter 7. Chapter 13 is basically a debt consolidation plan. You repay creditors over an extended period of time under the terms of a court-approved payment plan. If at the end of the process you have made all of your payments, you will generally receive a discharge of your remaining debts.
