FAQs
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I attended the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and studied art and advertising. The two majors led me down the path to graphic design. My art background heavily influences my designs and the handling of imagery in my work.
- What types of customers have you worked with?
Primarily, I do print work for clients. I have done a lot of direct mail pieces in the form of two-sided, full color postcards. In addition to a lot of flyers and posters for entertainers, I have been approached by authors to design their book covers and promotional materials for their tours.
- Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I did the visual branding for the Twin Cities theatre production of "I (Heart) Brains," a zombie rock musical. With a Romeo-and-Juliet story about a boy who falls in love with a girl who happens to be a zombie, the possibilities were endless. I needed something compelling enough to match the premise as well as illustrative enough to convey the idea of the story. Without any promotional photos to use, I started completely from scratch. In developing the poster, I kept the imagery simple vector shapes against a colorful background. The idea for the color scheme was borrowed from old 1950s zombie B-movie posters and government caution signs (which also helped influence the decision to use simple silhouetted characters). The two main characters are surrounded by their own respective enemies and visually separated via the color scheme. It is a relatively simple layout, but its icons communicate the message so clearly. The poster received a lot of positive attention from patrons and many stated that they wanted to see the show because they loved the poster so much. I designed the rest of the marketing materials around the poster design in the form of a soundtrack album cover, business cards and social media web ads. The feedback regarding this project was quite positive and it is one of my favorite pieces both visually and conceptually.
