Introduction: I travel all over the state of Missouri. In the last year, I've done cases in 16 different counties. I think that helps give me perspective on different types of judges, prosecutors, and even clients. I've been successful in large cases (including the largest identity theft and fraud cases in the state's history), small cases, and everything in between in Circuit and Municipal courts. Every case and client needs a different strategy, but I try to employ a combination of three different strategies: 1. Detective work - Helping to gather good evidence and making my client's position at trial or negotiation stronger. This happens through legal methods like depositions, but also by conducting internet searches, hiring private investigators, and plain old fashioned talking to witnesses. 2. Humanizing my client - for the most part, my clients are good people accused of doing a bad thing. But, most people should not be defined by their actions in their worst moment. Convincing judges, prosecutors, and juries that my clients are redeemable and/or good is a huge part of the battle. 3. Thinking strategically - This is what people typically think of with lawyers. Filing motions, doing research, and making arguments. Sometimes the government just makes mistakes that need to be exploited. I enjoy standing up for the little guy. Whether in criminal cases or consumer cases, I am always fighting powerful institutions, governments, businesses, and firms. I also enjoy playing detective - trying to piece together complex schemes and defenses.

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

UPDATE: In 2016 I've taught 2 different Continuing Legal Education courses for lawyers. I continue to emphasize CLE courses and completed over 30 hours again this year. Every lawyer in Missouri is required to complete 17 hours of Continuing Legal Education each year. Over the last 3 years I have averaged closer to 30 hours, including completing the Inn of Court trial program. Additionally, I teach mock trial to local high school students and stay abreast of daily developments in firearms law.

  • Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

UPDATE:There are a number of cases I'm proud of. For obvious reasons it is difficult to share details about them on the internet. As of August 2016, I've represented clients in 16 counties this year. I'm proud of several results including: I won a bond hearing for a man incarcerated for numerous probation violations and several new charges. The judge and prosecutor both complimented me on the record. The prosecutor changed his mind mid argument and ended up agreeing with my recommendation (which the court adopted). I've convinced a court in a difficult venue to not accept my client's 13 prior DWI convictions - this is the difference between a B felony (maximum 15 years, minimum 5) and an A misdemeanor (maximum 1 year...my client's punishment was measured in days). I've had numerous DWI cases outright dismissed. Felony fraud/forgery cases reduced to misdemeanors and numerous others. My clients are getting below average sentences, or winning outright, even in venues that traditionally sentence harshly. (2014)In the last 60 days I have: successfully appealed an assault conviction where the defendant was sentenced to 180 days and negotiated a new sentence of probation Forced two used car dealers to fully refund consumers who were sold lemons Won two trials Negotiated a plea deal of probation for a business owner facing 14 years in state prison Negotiated a plea deal of probation for a 19 year old facing 7 years and had numerous cases dismissed outright. *Remember, past results are not always indicative of future performance. Every case and situation is different and the choice of a lawyer is an important decision. You should not rely on advertisements alone. Ask your friends and relatives for advice (but don't talk about the details of your case), call me and ask me questions, consult with other lawyers.
