FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Generally, I pass all material cost on to the homeowner and just charge for labor. There are two cases where a small additional fee applies: If there is a lot of driving involved for getting special materials If there are extremely high material costs that must go on my credit. Labor charges: Painting/Installation/General Handy-man -- $15.00/ hr. Carpentry -- $18-25/hr (depending on the complexity of the project and materials) I have a deal for booking by the week, which is $25 off for 40hrs work. This is especially helpful for larger projects involving multiple functions, or if you are just looking for a helper.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I grew up making things with my dad and grandfather in Upstate South Carolina. I developed advanced skills in woodworking and metal fabrication as a sculpture student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where I received my Bachelor's degree. Also during those years I painted the dorms at Clemson University during summers. I learned everything I know about painting from an old timer from Pennsylvania who was very keen on the right ways and wrong ways of doing things. After college I worked for several small businesses including a scenic construction company that fabricated large-scale sets for theaters in and around Chicago. This is where I learned to fabricate quickly and make/work from scale drawings. I've also enjoyed other work as a product development manager for a start-up food company in Brooklyn, NY that makes kid snacks (Little Duck Organics, Inc.) and as a freelance graphic designer. August 2014 I moved to the Asheville area with my fiancé and settled into helping folks fix up their homes.
- What types of customers have you worked with?
Honestly, I do A LOT of painting. It is quickest and cheapest way to make a big impact in any remodeling project. I am very patient and enjoy painting, especially if I have a good podcast to listen to!
