Marie B. says, "Thanks to Mason, owner of Powell’s Home Improvements, he saved the day when I needed repairs done quickly on my house in order to pass the inspection by the appraiser for my mortgage refinance. I enjoyed the team of painters on my property and the crew leader, Jomar, was very knowledgeable about the paint products necessary and needed supplies for making any needed repairs. The team followed strict guidelines for scraping and disposing of lead paint ( I live in a historic district). I would highly recommend them for their quality job, cleaning up after their work each day, and explaining prior to accepting the job, all that would be included in the price."See more

Carmen Tedino says, "I want to take a minute to express my sincere appreciation to Rodas construction and Larissa. I noticed a couple weeks ago there was some shingles in the front of my house that were missing. Rodas had put a new roof on my house five years ago unknown to me. My warranty ran out in December 2025. I called the office and Larissa looked at my policy and said it expired and I asked if there was anything they could do as it only has been a couple of months, after she talked to her manager she sent a crew out and the repairs have since been done. thank you again too Rodas for going above and beyond after my warranty expired. As always, I will continue to refer Rodas construction for any type of home repairs."See more

Leyla I. says, "My ratchety small outdated shower had to GO! The door was falling out, and my four-legged daughter 🐕‍🦺 could barely fit in to take her baths. Also, I had a garden tub that was collecting dust. I may have used it a handful of times in the decade I’ve been residing in my home. I searched and consulted with several contractors, including the prominent ones advertised on TV. They were high-pressure, slimy, and greedy salespeople. Then I met the husband-and-wife team who treated me like family. They looked at my pathetic shower and transformed it beyond my imagination! The project team was on time, very professional, and paid attention to every detail in producing an exceptional masterpiece. Additionally, they used quality products that would last a lifetime. This evening, I stepped into my spa shower feeling luxurious for the first time. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for creating a functional and aesthetically beautiful shower 😍🥰!! I give READY SET & REMODEL 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 TEN STARS!!"See more

Nancy P. says, "If you have a project; hire Cheddi. Read on if you want to know more. Responsiveness/Professionalism/Responsiveness/Value/Punctuality - he deserves 5 stars in all categories. (I typically am the person that always gives 4 out of 5 b/c there could be just one more thing..) I reached out to him on a Sunday and within minutes he had responded asking for basic contact information, we discussed an initial time to meet the next day. He said his office would confirm on Monday. Monday morning I received a meeting invite. As a working professional, I did not know this was missing from my life until he sent me an invite. 5-star moment. Before arriving I received a text saying that he was on his way and I could track his progress. Once on-site, he immediately identified issues that we had with an existing project and explained why they were problems. We discussed various options during our meeting and later that night he provided a detailed quote. Despite the fact that we just met, he realized that he was fixing an existing problem for us, so he arranged to start sooner than later. Before the project started he met his leads from each category (framing, electrical, and painting) on-site to review their section to ensure there were no surprises. Part of our project involved deciding on a stain color. This was a big deciding factor for us and we were undecided up until the very end. At one point, I said, "Just go ahead with..." and he stopped me and said, "No, this is important to you; we can wait. I want you to be happy with it." He helped us come up with the final solution and I couldn't be happier with the color. We weren't a bother to him, he wasn't trying to rush us. He cared and wanted us to take our time. - That's above and beyond. 5-star moment. Throughout the project he has been very communicative, asking us to make design choices at appropriate parts, letting us know when slight changes are necessary. At the end of every day, he reviews what will be done the next day and asks if there are any questions. He makes it very easy & comfortable to ask questions/talk about changes/point out items that still need to be addressed. The project spilled into two weeks and on Friday we weren't sure if the painters would be coming back (they had left a lot of stuff out). Texted Cheddi - came over within the hour to clean it up himself. 5-star moment. He will definitely be doing more projects at our home. So again, if you have a project; hire Cheddi."See more

Denise E. says, "⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I can’t recommend this company enough. From start to finish, the experience was top-tier. Communication was clear, timelines were realistic, and the execution exceeded expectations. What stood out most was their attention to detail and ability to solve problems before they became issues. They didn’t just complete the job—they improved the entire project. Everything was handled professionally, efficiently, and with a level of care you don’t usually see in this industry. Pricing was fair, the work was high quality, and they delivered exactly what they promised. If you’re looking for a company that actually knows what they’re doing and takes pride in their work, this is it. I’ll definitely be using them again and referring them to others."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

You may choose to hire a construction project manager for your residential or commercial project. For the hands-on homeowner who wants to be involved in home construction but isn’t comfortable hiring subcontractors, a construction project manager can oversee these relationships and supervise labor. Typically, construction project managers charge a fee that is a flat percentage of the total construction project cost. This may range from 10 percent to 15 percent, depending on the company and the services they provide. This means a $30,000 home remodel project would have a construction project management fee of $3,000-$4,500. Hiring a construction project manager generally precludes the markup on subcontractor labor charged by a general contractor. The drawback to this choice is that, unlike a general contractor, the construction project manager won’t be financially responsible for the work of the subcontractors. For larger projects, you may hire a construction project manager who will also hire a general contractor. This provides the benefits of the general contractor along with the management services of the project manager, who will be on board from the beginning. The construction project manager will be involved in the design phase and work with the architects and the building crew, facilitating a smoother overall process.

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

A contractor license number is proof that your contractor is operating their business legally, that they have the proper documentation required by your state or region, and that they are competent in their area of work (electrical, plumbing, construction, etc.). Licensed contractors should freely advertise their contractor license number. If not, you can request it before considering them for hire. You can also research your contractor using their license number. The database for your state will indicate the field they are licensed to work in; whether they are up to date on insurance, workers’ compensation and bonds; and whether they have any consumer complaints issued against them. If the licensed contractor you are hiring does not have employees, they are not required to carry workers’ compensation. Each state or region will have their own database for licenses, such as the State of Oregon Construction Contractors Board. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
