About
I hold a Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree, and I am currently pursuing a Doctoral Degree in Classical Guitar Performance. I also have twenty years teaching experience including positions at Music Academy of North Carolina, Music and Arts Center (Huntersville, NC), Central Piedmont Community College, and Davidson College. I can teach a diverse range of styles and genres from classical guitar, rock, blues, pop, jazz, metal, etc... I utilize many apps to help students reach their goals faster and teach based on the students goals. Many of my students learn to read standard notation, tab, chord charts, and lead sheets depending on their individual goals. I strive to create a fun relaxed atmosphere where students can enjoy their time and learn a lot at the same time. Rates are $35 for 30 minutes, $50 for 45 minutes, and $60 hour for weekly lessons. I have a home office set up as a teaching studio and students only need to bring their instruments (amplifier and cable provided during lesson). I love seeing my students reach their goals (no matter how big or how small). The smile, sense of satisfaction, and confidence that I see in my students as they progress gives me a great sense of humility to be able to work with such great students week after week and many times year after year. From beginners who have never played a note in their life to advanced students who have played for years I enjoy sharing the joy of music with each of them.

James has been an excellent teacher for me. At age 66 I decided I wanted to take Jazz guitar lessons. I’ve dabbled with guitar for years but never had formal lessons and never had experience with Jazz chords. James is incredibly knowledgeable and versatile. He has great teaching skills and is a super nice guy. I went to see him perform on classical guitar and I was in awe!

I’ve been studying classical guitar with James for some time now, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the experience. I’m 68 and play at an intermediate level, and James has been helping me build a meaningful and challenging repertoire that includes both intermediate and more difficult pieces. What stands out most is how he’s opened my eyes to the interpretive side of classical guitar—how great players bring their own voice to the music. For the first time, I feel empowered to explore my own musical expression, not just play the notes on the page. James is deeply knowledgeable about the guitar and its literature, highly professional, and an all-around kind and supportive teacher. I don’t have much experience playing in front of others, but he creates a comfortable, encouraging environment that really puts me at ease. I highly recommend him to any guitarist looking to grow—not just in skill, but in confidence and artistic identity. Five stars, without a doubt.

James is wildly talented on the guitar, but he still has a way with beginners. He's down-to-earth, witty, and loves to see his students succeed. I've been taking lessons for just a month and I've seen major progress already.

I started working with James because I wanted to pick back up the guitar. James is extremely affable, makes the student feel comfortable, and most importantly, is an guitar instructor. I have taken guitar lessons previously and James distinguishes himself from my past instructors through his emphasis on technique as well as accomodating my taste in music while still encouraging me to do the work that will most efficiently enhance my skills. I would definitely recommend James to anyone looking to start learning guitar or looking to pick it back up!
