I've worked with Sergio on several projects over the years. I own a historic home which I have been renovating. Sergio has helped with small electrical projects, he has mounted televisions, other wall hangings and helped with general handyman jobs. Sergio is diligent, respectful and hardworking. I have referred him to several of my friends who also found him honest, conscientious, fair and hardworking.

Chris was great and fast! He put a bed together for me and recycled my old frame and the packing box. He also helped me with a quick small add on handyman type repair in my bathroom. I will not hesitate to call Chris in the future.

Dean did an amazing kitchen tile job for us, as well as some exterior siding repair and miscellaneous jobs on a rental property we own. He was extremely patient in working with us and the tenants to decide on a solution. I was very impressed that he went out of his way to drive to multiple stores to find tile that might work. He was very accessible and informative, and was very reasonably priced. I'd definitely recommend Dean as a handyman.

I hired Mr. Byrd and his crew to do some interior painting, pressure wash house and decks, and repair rotten door frame. His initial response for a price quote and scheduling was very good and he underbid another home repair contractor and that was good. Overall Mr. Byrd and his crew did a very nice job on the interior painting on walls which were badly stained by cigarette smoke over the years. However, I should have known better than to go to work and leave a check expecting the work to be completed, but I didn't really have a choice that day. The back door frame that was repaired badly needed a second coat of paint. Also, when pressure washing the front deck floor they chipped the paint of the bottom of the deck rails. I called Mr. Byrd and told him about this. He told me that he would come back early the next week. That's been 2 weeks ago and I've not heard anything else from him. I have a realtor coming in to look at the house next week so I guess I'll have to make these corrections myself. Although these are small things, I feel he should make it right since he's been paid for the job. Mr. Byrd has come back to correct the issues that were pending. Apparently, he thought that someone in his crew had come back to do this, but they had not done so. Everything looks very good now.

I would highly recommend Lockett Handyman Services for any general repairs. Paul was right there hanging a heavy mirror I could not manage, fixing my piano lamp that movers took apart and left an impossible mess, installing an electrical dimmer switch for a too-bright chandelier and replacing dowels that movers lost from an antique desk - all in little more than 2 hours of time!

Daniel was exceptional. Me and my wife decided we wanted to add some additional shelves in our closets and Daniel came right on time. His pricing was fair and competitive. He also did some additional work for us at my mother in laws house. His work is very very good. Couldn't ask for better service. We will be using his services again really soon.

I hired Mr. Cloer and his son to maintain my parent's yard. He has mowed, aerated, and mulched. He will be trimming and the hedges and trees. Very pleased with the quality of work. My mom has told me several times how nice & polite they are, and said they are "hard workers". This means a lot, because she was heartbroken when the last gentleman had to give up his landscaping business. Will continue to use their services.

Mr. Mitchell was great. I originally asked for just lawn mowing and trim. I asked if he could replace my mailbox in addition I was quoted a fair price and both jobs were completed the next day. My yard looks great and the mailbox is now new! I will definitely call Mr. Mitchell again when I have another project. Great handyman services.

Mike reset/re-installed a toilet and pedestal sink in our powder room. It had been removed in order for new flooring installation to be completed. Mike quickly responded to my Thumbtack project request and scheduled a day and time that was convenient for me. He was punctual and very professional. He actually did a better job resetting/reinstalling the fixtures than the original contractor installation. His quote/price was also better than the other handymen who responded to my request, but I hired Mike based on how responsive he was to my contacts with him. Mike was also very friendly and personable - so that made the experience even better. We plan to use Mike for any of our future handyman needs. We are glad we found him!

I would like to express how absolutely pleased I was with Do It Right Handyman, Thomas Turbilt. After wanting and looking for a handyman I truly lucked out when I found him. First of all, he followed up with me immediately online with questions regarding the projects I needed done and again before the appointment we had scheduled. He was very professional, on time, and the quality of his work was just what I wanted. The cost was very reasonable. I already have a list of additional projects for him and have been singing his praises to my neighbors, friends and family.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
