My front lawn was a big mound with the remains of an old pine tree in the middle. Land levelers removed the old stump and decaying root system and corrected the grade with respect to the sidewalk and driveway. Finally seeded for a new lawn. All done in a timely manner.

When I hired Bordeaux Construction I was surprised they could get to my driveway as quick as they did. It was a very large 2 car drive way and they had to use a Bobcat to dig it out to set the forms. There was minimal damage to the yard. The following day they poured the concrete. They are a professional crew and got the job done very fast. They also had to take down some fencing and re- install it afterwards. My yard went from grass and dirt to concrete in almost 48 hours. Simply amazing I saved over $500.00 over the other estimates I received. The price was excellent and the work virtually flawless. I would recommend them for any concrete work. They also do many other things around the house as well. You cannot go wrong with this company. I also check with the licensing board and the better business bureau they have no complaints in 13 years of business. Thumbs up.

They came to the house first thing in the morning. They took out old sidewalks and driveway. Put up forms for new driveway and sidewalks with rebar. By lunchtime they were pouring new concrete. Looks amazing. Great job.

Great guy. Did what he said he would do. Reasonably priced and as a plus he introduced me to his sister who did our paver install. Will definitely use Leo again.

Let's talk about Brandon. Not only did he take the time to answer every question I had, but he listened to requests I had as well. He responded to me quickly and kept me up to date on where he was on the project. At some point, I wanted to change the steps he had done for me. [Not his fault, it was originally my design and I changed it on him well after the fact.] he not only helped me figure out how to get the design I wanted to work, but was VERY fair on the price. I had an OCD moment and wanted some posts centered and when I told him, he told me he figured I may want that and had already thought about how he would change then so it would be nothing to do. Part way through the project, my husband hired some guys to drop off wood at our house. These guys DUMPED bolder size tree trunks taller then my car in my driveway and left! Wouldn't come back to cut them and we had no way to do it! Brandon came to my rescue and rented a machine to cut them up for my husband and even stacked them for us. He even cleaned up the front yard for us too. The deck for the front and back are now done and beautifully completed. It was a pure board base with a TREX railing. Thank you Brandon for all your hard work! We hope to work with you again soon!

I contracted Experience Concrete Design LLC to replace an apron and 40X24 driveway in the front of my house and lay a new apron and 30X24 driveway in the back of my house. Bottom line up front, we are very satisfied with the work performed by this company. I received a total of four estimates for this work. Justin responded for Experience Concrete to provide an estimate for the work. I had quite a few questions because I was going to have a tree taken down that was on the edge of the area where the new driveway would be placed. I was concerned that the roots may continue to decay under the newly laid concrete and cause problems. I was very pleased with the responses that Justin gave to my questions. I felt that he was honest in his responses, sincere in his desire to present a total picture of the work to us, and that the quote was fair. For these reasons, we chose Experience Concrete although they were not the lowest quote. After we had the tree removed, Justin scheduled our work to begin. His crew showed up as scheduled. All work went smoothly with removing the old concrete in the front of the property. However, when the crew began preparing the surface for the new driveway, we discovered that the contractor who removed the tree did not grind the roots as requested. We were in jeopardy of having our work delayed while we attempted to contact the company to come back and work on the roots. However, Justin assisted us in locating a contractor who came in and ground the roots down the next morning so that we had minimal delay. The day that the concrete was poured, Justin had his entire crew working. Everything went smoothly and both driveways were down that day. When we called the right of way inspector, both aprons passed inspection.

Bill and his crew arrived on time, were friendly and hard working. They removed an old driveway and sidewalk and replaced it with a larger, beautiful work of art. Bill listened to our ideas and did a great job discussing his past experiences to help us with our final decisions. We appreciated that they cleaned up every day and were considerate of our lawn and landscaping. We will highly recommend Virginia Beach Hardscapes to our friends and family.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

      • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
      • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
      • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
      • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
      • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
      • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

      What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time.
