I hired Gillaspie Handyman to hang a door and repair some drywall repairs. The drywall repair was extensive but he finished the job in one day.I was very impressed with their professionalism and the quality of work. I would hire Nick and his crew again in a second and most likely will in the near future. Thank you again for an great service experience which many times is not so smooth. Jason Wallace

We had BWH do interior painting and trim, repair drywall from roof leaks, replace rotted exterior trim, and paint all of the exterior trim and some stucco areas. Ben's team of Ronald, Luis and Fabio were easy to work with. They arrived on time and cleaned-up after themselves each day. They were professional, kind and good at what they do. They are skilled at cutting in with the brush and painting nice clean lines around trim. They covered floors and furniture while they painted. There were no accidents. I would recommend BWH for you next interior/exterior painting project. Here's is a smart tip... Be certain of your paint colors before the painting begins. Do not assume a paint color you saw in a friend's home or on a paint card will look the same in your space. The amount of natural light coming into a room can completely change the color. Spend time to buy and apply various samples directly on your walls. Once you are certain of the paint color and sheen you want, then schedule BWH to come paint your walls. It will be done quick and look great! Thank you!! :)

Great job in communicating with me and very professional in getting the work done in a timely fashion. My tenant was pleased with the work to replace the garbage disposal in a timely fashion and I was pleased with the reasonableness of the cost of the job. Much better than most of the quotes I received. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for repair work to be performed at your house.

We need patching on our bathroom walls, including water damage repair and installation of a new exhaust fan. Steve did a wonderful job The walls turned out to be plaster, but he left them looking terrific and ready for the painter. He even took down some broken fixtures from the walls so he could patch those areas too. Steve was professional, and we're entirely satisfied with his work. We'll be hiring him again soon for another project.

I've had several projects completed through Thumbtack and this has by far been my best experience. Geoff completely removed and replaced my front yard mailbox. The communication and completion of work was prompt and I was very pleased with the outcome. The smoothest home repair experience I've had - I didn't even have to take off work to be on site. He handled everything (purchasing, installation, removal). I will definitely use Summit Solutions for future needs!

Roberto did 2 jobs for me. One was Drywall repair. He is very meticulous and does excellent drywall work. I will use him again for all my drywall repair work, personal home or rental! Roberto and his painting crew also repainted an uptown townhome. They did good work. Someone in his crew did not use a drop cloth and paint got on the floor/rug. Roberto came back and cleaned it up. I will use him again for painting more of my rental properties. I will do a better job emphasizing his drywall meticulousness needs to apply to all his painters too. We have not hired Zachary yet for our cabinet job, as we have to postpone it until we can have the countertops replaced. We plan to hire him because of his punctuality, knowledge, experience, kindness, good value for the money, and his examples he provided of jobs similar to ours.

Mike is everything you hope for in a handyman but so rarely find. He is knowledgeable, professional, experienced, detail oriented, communicates well, takes pride in his work, strives to complete the job to your satisfaction, punctual, dependable and his pricing is more than reasonable. Mike was hired to finish off a home we are renovating. He installed fans, light fixtures, bath accessories, CO2 detectors, smoke alarms, installed faucets, replaced outlets, exterior lights, adjusted doors that didn’t close properly and is great at drywall repairs. We have several projects and plan to hire Mike for as many of them as his schedule will allow.

Stanley is a very personable and professional person who truly enjoys the awesome work he does. The time he took to present me with an estimate was quick and very fair. After he completed my island, it was simply a 'WOW' moment and I am totally impressed with his work. He knew what was needed and did a fantastic job. I would highly recommend him to anyone who would like to change your a room, area, with wood that can be taken down at a later date without ripping up the drywall.

Scott repaired a large hole in our bathroom ceiling caused by a plumbing leak. He was fast snd professional and his pricing was great! Once the job was done it looked like nothing had ever happened. No visable seams from the repair at all. Thats saying a lot because thats hard to do on a non textured ceiling.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
