Our legal situation looked straight-forward but rapidly got more complicated. Mr. Mansfield kept us apprised of the decision tree we were facing: what the possible options were at each point based on the actions of the opposing attorney. When our situation got more complicated, he advocated for us without changing his fee quote. After it was over, knowing he had negotiated for us for two hours more than we had anticipated, I volunteered to pay for his professional services. The legal process is complicated and adversarial, and it felt good to have a knowledgeable attorney watching our back.

Wiley Nickel is a first class attorney! I had a pending charge in North Carolina that was preventing me from getting a job I really needed and wanted. I live in Oregon now so I was in a complete frazzled state of mind trying to figure out what I was going to do. I went on AVVO and started researching attorneys in the Raleigh, NC area and came across Wiley who had outstanding reviews. I sent a message on a late Saturday night and received a response Sunday morning! We discussed my case and I decided to hire him. From the beginning, Mr. Nickel was upfront and honest about the fact that I may be required to travel to North Carolina to handle my case and get it closed out, but he assured me he would do everything possible to try and prevent that. Not only did he take care of my case without me having to step foot outside of Oregon, he got it completely dismissed!!! This is where he went above and beyond his duties of an attorney.....my new place of employment was willing to work with me and still offer me the position as long as the case wasn't in pending status anymore. After a few weeks of us waiting for the DA to be back from vacation so Wiley could talk to him, I was getting very nervous that somebody else would be hired in my place because they were tired of waiting. Wiley offered to write them a letter explaining that the case is being worked on and he was confident in it being dismissed. I think that is what ultimately saved me from losing the job. He didn't have to take the time to do that and it was out of pure kindness of heart and understanding that he offered to do anything he could to help me. So in the end, my case was dismissed, I have officially been offered the position and now Wiley and his team are working on getting it expunged from my record (at no extra cost!). He clearly has a big heart and truly cares about his clients. Not once did I feel bad about bugging him with all my questions and concerns, he listened patiently and responded to emails right away. I highly recommend Wiley Nickel and his firm for any legal troubles you may have. Thank you again Wiley! You truly saved my life :)

Mr. Brick gave me sound advice in quick time when I consulted him on a work related injury. Unfortunately my case was in SC and he was just in FL at the time. His consult was perfect and he directed me to someone who could handle my case. Because of Alex, and what he told me to do, I received a settlement that was far higher than expected. I finally felt justified after trying to work through the pain and disability for 6 months while my job offered no relief.

I recently had a situation occur that was potentially damaging for the rest of my life. I called Jesse and within 5 minutes of discussion on the phone told him to sign me up as a client and asked when we could meet. We discussed a brief overview of my situation and met the next day. Based upon our brief, initial discussion Jesse had already formulated some ideas and then, based upon our further, in-depth discussions Jesse knew exactly what course of action to take. I left his office with a plan, a promise from him to communicate and a much better feeling. Jesse laid out the course of how things would happen and and play out and how he would address them and he thought best to move forward. I trusted Jesse -implicitly- and he delivered. He researched my situation/case, contacted the appropriate parties in a timely and highly effective manner and proceeded to move forward exactly as he told me he would. Jesse never made any promises he couldn't keep/deliver and he was straight up with regards to matters that were of concern to me and potential "issues" with my situation. He quickly and effectively moved to trial but not without having a pretty clear picture of exactly what was going to happen. He told me what the outcome was likely to be and was completely honest during the whole process while giving me comfort with how the process would develop and evolve. Jesse was amazing - when we went to court that day he was more than just my advocate. He had my back in every sense of the word and truly looked out for my best interest. The results that Jesse attained are amazing - when I think of it I am still just a bit dumbfounded on how quickly he acted, how effective he was and how he delivered results that exceeded not only my expectations but, honestly, my best case scenario. Jesse will give you a review of your case, lay out his thoughts and opinion for you and tell you where you stand while making no unreasonable promises. I knew I had a good attorney when I read reviews from his peers and others in the legal field and they said they would choose Jesse if they needed an attorney - what I didn't know was that I would be getting someone who TRULY looks out for your human interests and rights. I could go on but I will close by simply stating that Jesse will tell you straight up what is going and and he will work hard for you, your rights and your interests.... and he isn't arrogant, judgemental or egotistical about it. Hire him -

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does an immigration attorney do?

Immigration lawyers help their clients through all phases of the immigration process. Experts on immigration law, they are legally qualified to represent U.S. citizens, permanent residents or undocumented immigrants. Immigration lawyers also provide assistance to visitors here on student, work or travel visas, and can represent clients who may have an expired visa or who have overstayed their visa.

You can hire an immigration lawyer to assist you with petitioning for renewing a permanent resident or green card, navigating the naturalization process, submitting an employee-based petition for a work visa, filing a petition for a family member, or representing you or a loved one who is facing detention or deportation, as well as replacing, extending or changing a current visa, green card or work permit. The immigration process is highly complex, with multiple hearings, paperwork and requirements. Hiring a legal expert to represent you can help you make your best effort in the process. When researching immigration lawyers, it is very important to verify their qualifications and find a reputable attorney. Read reviews and verify that the immigration lawyer is licensed by your state before paying any fees.

How do you find a good real estate lawyer?

If buying or selling property feels overwhelming and the thought of finding a good real estate lawyer seems daunting, you’re in luck. There are some simple steps to follow for finding a trustworthy, affordable real estate lawyer to help with your property and legal needs.

  • Determine what kind of real estate lawyer you need. Many states require a real estate attorney to handle sale closing documents. For more complex matters such as a real estate deal gone awry or foreclosure, you’ll want to find an attorney who has successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Look for online reviews of real estate lawyers in your area. Verify that they have proven experience closing or winning cases like yours and that they are in good standing with the state bar association.
  • Choose two or three lawyers to interview. Many offer a free consultation to learn about your case and provide information about rates. For standard real estate closing services, in-depth interviewing might not be necessary.
  • Ask about their rates and whether they charge by the hour or provide services for a flat fee. Ask whether a retainer is required, and what the total bill should be for a case like yours.
  • Ask for a write-up of the services that will be covered by the projected costs.
  • Make sure you like the real estate agent and they treat you with respect. Confirm whether they or another person will be working on your case and make sure you’re comfortable with all members of their team.
  • Pay the retainer and hire your lawyer.

What is a personal injury lawyer?

A personal injury lawyer fights on your behalf if you’ve been injured physically, psychologically, economically or in reputation. This injury may be the result of neglect or malicious intent of another person, or it could be at the hands of a business, government or other entity. Personal injury lawyers specialize in tort law, which is the law of civil wrongs like car accidents, company wrongdoing, unlawful imprisonment and more.

To become qualified to be a personal injury lawyer in the United States, a person must earn a bachelor’s degree, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from a law school. Most states then require the person to pass the bar exam to become licensed to practice law. Unlike many attorneys who require a retainer, personal injury lawyers often work on contingency fees. This means that in lieu of payment upfront, they receive an agreed-upon percentage of the settlement in case of a win.

What does a real estate lawyer do?

A real estate lawyer represents their client’s best interest in all matters related to the sale, purchase and ownership of real estate. They are experts in real estate law. In states that require a real estate lawyer to close home sales, the lawyer must review and finalize all documents before the deal can be legally completed. Real estate lawyers also help clients legally protect their rights when entering, exiting or renegotiating a real estate deal. You can hire a real estate lawyer as an individual or as a business. A real estate lawyer can help with negotiation, addressing mortgage fraud, managing foreclosures and bankruptcy, transfers of titles and deeds, property ownership disputes, zoning issues, creating a co-ownership contract for joint purchase of a property, and much more. Real estate lawyers can also protect you from issues that result when a known problem was not properly disclosed by the previous owner. Overall, real estate lawyers are an added cost when it comes to buying and selling property, but they also ensure your best interests are met, and that you and the people you are doing business with comply with the law.

What kind of lawyer does wills?

No one likes talking about death, but it’s better than leaving your children or siblings to sort out your estate. A clearly planned will can make the time of mourning easier for everyone. An estate attorney will develop a legal will, create trusts on your behalf, and ensure the proper execution of your estate after you pass away.

Family attorneys and estate attorneys, also called probate and wills attorneys, can each prepare wills. The type of lawyer best suited to prepare your will depends on your situation. Most family attorneys provide services to prepare basic wills, including bequeathing property and personal items to family or naming a guardian for minor children. However, estate attorneys specialize in preparing wills in more complex situations. Consider hiring an estate attorney if you:

  • Have a large number of assets, especially those subject to estate taxes
  • Want to create a trust, such as allowing a spouse to live in your home until he or she dies and then leaving it to your children, or set up long-term care for a beneficiary
  • Have an ownership stake in a business
  • Expect someone to contest your will
  • Want to disinherit your spouse
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
