Introduction: Inspired by attending Woodstock ’69 and music by The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, and others, Producer/Engineer Karen Kane has been in the music business for more than 35 years. She attended Berklee College of Music in Boston and graduated from the Recording Institute of America, where she obtained 2 diplomas in audio engineering. Early in her career, she managed a number of recording studios including the well-known 6 West Recording, a major jingle facility in New York City. Since the 1970’s, Karen has produced and/or engineered over 200 full-length album projects and has engineered hundreds of live sound shows. Currently, she runs her own audio production studio, Karen Kane Music Productions in Wilmington, NC. Besides music recording, mixing and mastering, her Wilmington recording studio is also where she teaches Audio Engineering and Music Production. Kane’s recording career was originally focused in the Boston area from 1974-1990 and in Canada from 1990 to 2002. While in Boston, Karen worked at Intermedia Sound, where the legendary album, “Dream On” by Aerosmith was recorded. Kane helped pioneer the way for women in audio by being one of the first female recording engineers to be successful, as well as one of the first successful free-lance recording engineers (male or female) in the area. Kane’s recording work has been nominated for Boston Music Awards, and singles have appeared on U.S. music charts. Her extensive experience with on-location mobile recording includes the BareNaked Ladies (for a live TV special) and a music festival which included Janis Ian. In 1986, Karen engineered Tracy Chapman’s first-ever demo recording. While living in Toronto, Karen engineered 3 albums that were nominated for the Canadian Juno Award (the Juno is the “Canadian Grammy”). Two of the nominations were in the “Best Blues Album of the Year” category. In 1996, Karen was hired to develop and teach new audio engineering courses for Toronto’s Centennial College and The Learning Annex. In 1998, she joined the well-respected Toronto Audio Production College, Harris Institute for the Arts. Karen is the author of numerous articles on recording methods and techniques published in Canadian Musician, Professional Sound, Sing Out and Hot Wire. Many of her articles can be seen on this website. In 2002, Kane re-located to Wilmington, North Carolina and continued her work as a Producer/Engineer and Audio Educator. In 2003, she launched 5 levels of audio engineering classes that are now in its’ tenth year. There are also one-on-one intensives or private classes catered to the individual. The classes are offered in January, April and September (Summer term is sometimes available). Registration forms are now being accepted for the next term. For more information, go to the Classes link on this website. In 2012, she expanded her teaching career by joining the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington as the instructor for the Recording Technology program. She continues to produce and engineer in her Wilmington recording studio and travels both regionally and internationally for music projects. Karen is pleased to announce that on July 6, 2013, she won “Producer of the Year” at the Statewide Carolina Music Awards in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 2014 and 2015, she was nominated again in that same category. Read the latest article about Karen Kane in Wilmington’s WILMA Magazine released May 2016. Turning raw songs into recorded masterpieces! Working with awesome musicians and songwriters.

Karen mixed and mastered my self-produced album which was recently nominated for an award (2014 Cape Fear Blues Society, Best Self-Produced Blues CD). A true professional who worked on my independent production as though I was a national act. The work environment is relaxed, creative and collaborative and I couldn’t be happier with the final product. Jim Nelson Singer/Songwriter, Wilmington, NC

"Thank you so much for the privilege of working with you! I'm STILL taking in the fullness of the experience because I've never had anything like it before. You are just so great at everything you do. You are both the most focused producer I've ever worked with AND the warmest and most sensitive." - Anna Gutmanis, Singer/Songwriter,Toronto about her single "I Am Who I Am"

I was very fortunate…let me rephrase that…I’m absolutely elated to have had my first CD experience with Karen Kane. After our first meeting I knew that I was in good hands as an artist. Why? She listened and cared about MY music and MY thoughts. This was surprising at first because Karen has ‘been there and done that’, but she guided me through production, recording, mixing, and mastering not only with great attention to detail, but sincerity and honesty which was very important to me. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a newbie, you couldn’t pick a better person all the way around. - Dennis Brinson, Singer/Songwriter, Wilmington, NC
