Sal is very professional and reliable. He fixed a water stain I had on my ceiling and painted the bedroom and bathroom ceilings. He was also responsive to fixing a crack and repainting the area on my wall. There was evidence of the crack. He did a fantastic job and I would recommend him to anyone looking to paint or wallpaper their home.

I Highly recommend Mike Levy for his efficiency and knowledge. He helped us remove and rehang three doors and they required extra effort to make them function properly. We would definitely hire him again for any construction jobs we may need in the future.

I couldn't imagine having a better handyman experience than Steve provided putting together Ikea furniture. He was very easy to work with and skillful, and for a very reasonable price.

I hired Roque to remove wallpaper in my daughter's family's new home. He was readily available by phone or text. He showed up as scheduled. He and his workers were very mindful of my ill grandson's schedule/routine and my daughter was very thankful for that. We are now planning the next phase of the project and again Roque is taking my grandson and his well-being into account with exposure to smells and such. I would not hesitate to recommend Roque and hope to use his services again ourselves when we tackle the upstairs.

Clifford was very responsive to our project and professional throughout the job. He brought his knowledge and expertise to re-do/expand our deck. The old deck had to be removed and new footings had to be poured for the added deck. The work site was always left neat and the job was completed in a timely manner. As always when you tear off an old deck, we discovered rot which Clifford addressed. From the time Clifford filed the permit to the time the job was done, Clifford treated our project as though he was the homeowner. We will certainly re-read Clifford for future projects.

Elvin was great! He painted all of the ceilings on the first floor of my house. He came out to look at my job the day I made the request, scheduled the work for 3 days later, finished in a day and my ceilings look fantastic! I couldn't be happier and decided to have him do more of the paint work that needs to be done in my new house as a result.

George removed ice dams for my neighbor and me after the 2015 blizzards. He responded quickly, gave us a good deal, and took excellent care of both my house and my neighbor's house. Ice removal supplies and contractors were nearly impossible to find at the time, and he came to our rescue. We were very grateful for his reliability and good work.

Mike took on the job of removing accumulated mildew from my cedar clapboards. He completed the job in the agreed upon time frame despite the heat and humidity of that day. He was true to the expectations of the job. Before and after pictures are a credit to his work.

Junk removal on Jan 9th. Agnaldo promptly answered my call. His price was slightly higher. When he went to the disposal yard , they charged him way more than I paid him! He was very polite and showed me the copy of the bill. I sure reimbursed him! My clutter is gone! Then I found out he sure is very handy. Installed and fixed all (3 level) smoke detectors! Changed my bulbs that were out of my reach, fixed a cabinet... We are considering hiring his crew to paint the entire inside. Waiting for other quotes to arrive! Very fast worker. I had to send away another guy yesterday. He was very slow ... not focused at all! Hope his price will be good enough for me to hire him. I got a lot done, that too very quickly:)) I am so glad I found him. He sure saved me money by being fast.

Newton was great! He was very knowledgeable and professional. We are already talking about other jobs we would like Newton National to do for us. This time, we had wallpaper removed and the walls prepped for paint. Newton was able to come by after work for an estimate and get started a few days later. He did a great job. I'd hire him again in an instant.

Norm has done a phenomenal job with painting our walls. So much so that we have hired him back for additional jobs and will continue to do so! He worked tirelessly and efficiently to get the jobs done. We are finding out Norm can do much more than just paint walls and I would highly recommend him for all of your handyman needs!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best way to remove wallpaper?

There are several proven methods for wallpaper removal; each has its pros and cons, but some are definitely easier. Peeling is usually the least painful, followed by soaking and stripping. Dry-stripping is the next most time-consuming, and steaming the most work. The average wallpaper removal job costs between $360 and $560. The method of removal can affect the cost, as steaming takes longer than peeling and will therefore typically cost more. Peeling wallpaper off is usually the quickest method. To see if your wallpaper can be peeled off, try gently edging up a corner and carefully peeling the paper off the wall in strips. If you can’t peel, then you’ll have to score and strip it, either by dry-stripping or by soaking and then stripping. Plaster walls can withstand moisture and can stand up to soaking and stripping, but drywall should not be soaked. For very stubborn wallpaper, steaming may be necessary, which is time-consuming but effective. If you prefer not to attempt these methods yourself, wallpaper removal pros have the proper tools and experience to quickly take down wallpaper and also repair any damage to your walls.

How much does it cost to remove wallpaper in a room?

The national wallpaper removal cost averages $360-$560, which will typically include multiple rooms. Pros often charge by the square foot to remove egregious wallpaper that is long past its prime. Wallpaper removal cost may range anywhere from 60 cents to $1.50 or more per square foot. A pro may estimate removal costs ranging between $160 and $300 for a medium-sized room. Costs can vary due to ceiling height, and some pros add a skim coat to make repainting or re-papering smoother. Here are some examples of average costs to remove wallpaper:

  • Foyer: 36-120 square feet, $21.60-$180.
  • Powder room: 16-36 square feet, $9.60-$54.
  • Living or dining room: 120-252 square feet, $72-$378.
  • Family room: 192-384 square feet, $115.20-$576.
  • Bedroom: 100-224 square feet, $60-$336.
  • Guest bath: 45-84 square feet, $27-$126.
  • Master bedroom: 168-384 square feet, $100.80-$576.
  • Master bath: 54-160 square feet, $32.40-$240.

Once the old wallpaper is gone, the average cost to install new wallpaper is $240-$350.
