FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
For most projects I charge $75 an hour. It’s important to know that not all time spent working on a project is billable. Sometimes the time is research time for me, not specifically associated with a client’s project. I also am happy to set up customized plans for clients who have a fixed budget or aren’t sure of the scope of the work to be done. This can either be a flat fee, which I determine after evaluating the project’s needs or a “Not to Exceed” fee. Often we can start the process on an hourly rate then switch to a different payment plan once the project is underway. Additionally, if a client needs me to shop for them or me to accompany them to look at say, countertops, etc, we can arrange a 1/2 day rate or whole day rate so that the time is a little more flexible.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
It’s important to me to get to know what the client is looking for and what the goals of the project are. Usually the first phone call or visit - which I don’t charge for - begins to shape the relationship. I say relationship because it’s critical to establish trust between the client and designer. If I can understand how you use your space and how you would like to feel in that space, whether work or home, your comfort level with me increases and we are better able to solve the design requirements. I want clients to be comfortable with the person who’s measuring inside their closets and directing often large changes in their personal space. If we both feel like it’s a good fit, then the project moves forward. And the excitement begins!
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a degree in Interior Design as well as a degree in Studio Art. I began working in interior design in the late 70’s at a large international company based in MA. I then went on to work for the Dept of Defense overseas as a Facilities Design Specialist for multi discipline projects for a few years before taking a break to raise a family. I also work occasionally with my architect husband, whose office is across the hall from my studio.
