In the fall of 2013, I was informed by the Westchester County Pistol Permit division that they were going to start the process to revoke my pistol permit and I was facing the loss of my handgun. I knew that I needed a very knowledgeable lawyer familiar with the Second Amendment. In my search for this, Amy Bellantoni of the Bellantoni Law Firm was repeatedly highly recommended to me by other people who had similar problems with the Pistol Permit Division. At my initial meeting with Amy, I knew that I had made the right choice to have her represent me to keep my pistol permit. She really listened to me and my concerns of losing my pistol permit and patiently answered my questions about her legal strategy. As the case proceeded, she regularly communicated with me and quickly responded when I needed to contact her. Thanks to Amy, I did not have my pistol permit revoked. For anyone that may find themselves in a similar circumstance with the possibility of losing their pistol permit in Westchester County, call Amy Bellantoni.

Before I discovered the Law Office of Mary Katherine Brown (MKB), I was advised by an attorney in a well-established part of town. During the consultation, the first thing he did was cranking out numbers for the payments I would have to make. For the rest of the consultation, I was unable to get him to listen to my real concerns and advised me accordingly. I felt like I was seeing an accountant more than an attorney. With Ms. Mary Katherine Brown at MKB, I was able to discuss my situation. She looked at it carefully before any legal options were presented, and advised me what position each option would put me in. She addressed my issues, cleared up my confusion, answered all my legal questions, and informed me of the governing laws. All that in plain English and repeated if I could not follow. Her approach to the problem I faced with a patient and caring attitude helped me make the right choice. She also pointed out whether litigation was necessary in my case instead of just advocating it to obtain legal fees from the client. In other words, she is acting in her clients' interests first, not hers. As necessary in my particular situation, she also referred me to another equally competent attorney in a different area of the law, which saved me the trouble of finding one myself. Obviously with her excellent legal advice and services, you do not expect her to be next to the phone whenever you call--she may be in consultations or litigation. Her aides are all professional, courteous and helpful to relate messages in a timely manner, or set up appointments with her. Her billing is transparent and honest. Her fees are significantly lower than those in the well-established part of town. You should not be surprised by everything positive I have to say about my experience with MKB because, as part of her stated objectives, it is the goal of Ms. Mary Katherine Brown to do all she can to achieve the best possible result for her clients with a good lawyer's toolbox. She exceeds the expectations of a good lawyer.

I was out of work for well over a year. We went from eating well to barely eating in a very short time. The bill collectors were trying to squeeze us for our last dime with threats of lawsuits and all sorts of tactics. I finally gave in and got a free consultation from a bankruptcy attorney from Smotritsky Law firm. Once we had an attorney on our side the collectors all ran and hid. Today we are totally free from all of our bills and are able to buy food again and not just ramen noodles. Real good food. Smotritsky Law Group is the best.

There is so much to be grateful for! First, Atty. Shepelsky's professional and dedicated representation of my case was fantastic! Because of her expertise and excellent work ethics, the traffic violation filed against me was dismissed. Secondly, I still got a clean driving record. The best part, I did not even have to go to court which I had been quite nervous about. Also, I found her fees to be very reasonable. I highly recommend this attorney because she is trustworthy and provides results!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a personal injury lawyer?

A personal injury lawyer fights on your behalf if you’ve been injured physically, psychologically, economically or in reputation. This injury may be the result of neglect or malicious intent of another person, or it could be at the hands of a business, government or other entity. Personal injury lawyers specialize in tort law, which is the law of civil wrongs like car accidents, company wrongdoing, unlawful imprisonment and more.

To become qualified to be a personal injury lawyer in the United States, a person must earn a bachelor’s degree, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from a law school. Most states then require the person to pass the bar exam to become licensed to practice law. Unlike many attorneys who require a retainer, personal injury lawyers often work on contingency fees. This means that in lieu of payment upfront, they receive an agreed-upon percentage of the settlement in case of a win.

What should you look for in a personal injury lawyer?

A personal injury lawyer will advocate for your legal rights if you’ve been hurt in an accident at work or in daily life, have suffered from medical malpractice, or are struggling to have your insurance carrier cover your needs. It may be helpful to talk with two or three lawyers before selecting one. When looking for a personal injury lawyer, research their reviews and make sure former clients have had good experiences with them. Next, make sure the personal injury lawyer has experience and proven success winning cases similar to yours. Confirm that the lawyer is licensed to provide services in your state. When you find a qualified personal injury lawyer with whom you want to work, freely discuss payment and fees before any work begins. Most lawyers offer a free consultation to learn what your case is about and explain their rates. Personal injury attorneys typically receive a percentage of your settlement (called a contingency fee), so they are paid after the trial or case is complete. Keep in mind that some attorneys have fees that you must pay even if you don’t win your trial. It’s important to understand these details before work begins so you don’t have any unhappy surprises later. Lastly, it’s wise to choose a personal injury lawyer that you have confidence in and with whom you can communicate openly and honestly.
