- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?My quote for basic services includes digital transfer of images via on-line protected password. Transfer of unedited images is typically the day of or day after the shoot or event. The timeline for transfer of edited images depends on the complexity of the edits and the number of images selected for editing.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?The specific process is completely dependent on the type of service requested. generally, I'll be communicating via Thumbtack messenger, phone, e-mail, Skype, or Facebook Messenger, as appropriate. I am concentrating on wedding photography, so I am including my specific process for an event of that type (includes quinceanera, sweet 16, engagement and similar). For a head shot session, family photo, graduation portrait, model portfolio, designer fashion or similar, the details will change but not the attention to planning. ////// My preference for wedding clients is to meet for an introductory photo shoot beforehand (the earlier the better) with time before or after to go over details. The biggest issue that concerns me is the time allotted for group portraits (wedding party and family photos) and your first formal portraits together. Venue and time of day play into that, of course, and sometimes the weather. Sometimes - most often - the venue and time of day are non-negotiable and weather is something that can't be controlled, of course. In an ideal situation, we have ample time - an hour or more is best, 40 minutes is minimum - between the end of the ceremony and the start of the reception and two options for group photos. ////// When the venue is a church and when the space permits, I like to do the wedding party photos in front of the altar. If there are risers, family photos can also be done there. For the couple, I like to do formal and individual portraits in the same space and then move to a second location - preferably outdoors - for a series of more relaxed portraits. Fun portraits with the wedding party can be done in the church or outdoors, as to your preference. ////// For group and family photos, I always ask for the help of someone in the wedding party to be my majordomo. That role requires a person with organizational skills with a "take charge" attitude who can help me form groups and keep people focused. The best choice is the person who first springs to mind when you read that. :) ////// Pre-ceremony getting ready photos can be done at the venue if time is a factor. The more planning that goes into those, the better the results. In many cases, brides use a room at the venue for getting ready and in a lot of those cases there isn't good natural lighting and the background is cramped and cluttered. When that is the case I always recommend getting ready at home or another private residence or, as sometimes happens, a hotel. Again, time permitting. //// During the reception, the DJ will be my best friend - he or she will control the timing of events and I will be in that person's hip pocket. I know you will probably have a timetable established beforehand but I find those often are just notional when it comes to the exact timing of events and the DJ is the one to set the pace based on real time happenings. So - I definitely make him or her an ally. //// In a perfect world, the photographer is able to influence the lighting for the reception. Laser balls and colored lights are romantic and dreamy and have their place but severely limit or inhibit the work of the photographer, most notably during the dances. Also in a perfect world, the dance floor is at least the size of a medium/large living room and I am able to set up light stands with continuous lighting or flashes - depending on your preference - for backlighting. Backlighting creates a more dramatic portrait effect that is a perfect match for the moment. I like to alternate between flash and ambient light and my preference is for a mix of 90 percent ambient to 10 percent flash with backlighting. I shoot a lot of candid shots during the reception and time and space permitting I always get posed table shots as well. I usually get those by dragging out a chair to stand on and shoot wide angle with everyone looking at the camera. These are great for documenting everyone who attended and people really enjoy them. //// When the timing is right, I always try to steal the couple away from the reception for a few minutes to get a dramatic sunset or night portrait. This would be after the dinner and I generally find the couple are much more relaxed and able to be in the moment for these shots. //// With all this talk of shooting, I should say a few words about my gear. All my cameras have dual card slots - no worries about a card failure wiping out your memories. I use a Nikon D5 camera for indoor work - it is fantastic in low light so no need to use disruptive flashes during the ceremony (most situations). I use a Nikon D810 for all portrait work, to include the group photos. It is a 36 megapixel camera that can produce poster sized prints if you wanted to do that. My third camera is the very capable Nikon D600. I don’t use it much – it is largely there as a back-up to the other two cameras. My off-camera lighting is provided by Neewer Vision 5, 400 watt strobes – more than powerful enough to provide full illumination for group shots indoors and to overpower the sun for best results outdoors. //// The day after the wedding I will go through the images from the day and eliminate the bad shots - (eyes closed, flash misfire, test shots, etc) and upload to a password-protected portfolio after doing a batch, automated edit using a state-of-the-art batch editing program called PhotoLemur. In the following days, using Photoshop and a suite of available commercial apps and actions, I'll do custom edits on one image from each portrait set (one each from the bridal portrait series, one each from the couple's portrait, one each from the wedding party portrait, and so on) and upload those separately, within one week of the wedding. All images will be delivered in the highest resolution, ready to download and share or print. You will have the option to print any of the photos - including the portrait edits - at the place of your choosing or you can order prints from a third party affiliated with my portfolio host. //// If you want edits on additional images, I will do that at $5 per edit and upload those for digital transfer. I also make custom paper prints on my professional grade printer for $25 for a 12x18, $15 for an 11x14, $7 for an 8x10 or 8.5x11, or $5 for a 5x7. For paper prints, my printer is the best choice for quality. The Pixma Pro-10 uses 10 different pigment inks that provide rich tones, deep blacks, and archival quality images that are guaranteed to maintain their color and vibrancy for 100 years (200 years if stored in an archival album). Printing at home allows me to use printer profiles specific to the paper choice and the ability to make test prints to ensure the print matches what I see on my monitor. //// Example: You want me to make a print of an image I have edited as part of the basic package (delivered separately within one week of the wedding). The edit has already been done, so the cost for the print is $25 for a 12x18, $15 for an 11x14, $7 for an 8x10 or 8.5x11, or $5 for a 5x7. Prints are made on archival paper and the printer uses dye rather than ink and is guaranteed not to fade under normal conditions (not exposed to direct sunlight) for 100 years //// Example: You want edits on images that were not made as part of the basic package. I charge $5 per image. //// I keep an archive of all my work in perpetuity. Barring a catastrophic event outside my control - fire or theft - I'll always have access to your files in the case that you lose yours to a hard drive crash or other misfortune. //// God forbid, but it is important to know I carry a liability insurance policy for professional photographers that pays medical costs in the event of injury resulting from any action or inaction on my part or the part of my equipment (example: someone trips over a tripod leg and breaks a bone). Not pleasant to think about and it has never happened, but it is there if something unfortunate ever does happen. //// I hope this answers some of your questions. If not, I available to talk by phone and I stand ready to set up a meeting and introductory shoot or talk via Skype or Facebook Messenger, which would be my preferred method of communication as we go along after the meeting. //// So that you know - I am currently in New Mexico but I am moving next week to Flint Ridge (Kansas) Oklahoma, which is about an hour and bit east of Tulsa down the 410. I will have intermittent cell service during that time and will be mostly off-line for a week or two while I establish residence and arrange for internet access. Not to worry - I will check in periodically while waiting for service, but may not be immediately responsive after Thursday of this week.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?I attended upper level classes using my GI bill and I have shot thousands and thousand of images in all sorts of lighting conditions, weather, and a vast array of localities.
