Interior Design

This was my first time using thumbtack. I thought I would refresh and redesign my kitchen/dining room/living room combination, and I was not entirely sure how to do it. I started with looking for a designer and pinged 3 designers on Thumbtack. The very swiftest response came from Valia Simonson, so I set up a time to chat. The call went great, and I got a sense of her background and her pricing. We set up time to have her come over and see the space. a couple of days later, I heard from another, who I felt I needed to connect with to get a different perspective. She was very pleasant, and yet, her really laid back nature did not give me comfort that she would be a project driver to get the work done quickly. Valia came over and her inquiry about what I wanted to achieve lead me to the path of refreshing my kitchen, which would have by far the biggest impact on the single room. I decided to repaint all the wood cabinets, the walls and the backsplash to achieve a more updated look and bring my kitchen into the modern age. With Valia's designer eye, she suggested new pendulum light fixtures to complete the look. Valia took all of the excess work off my plate to kickstart the project and get it done quickly. She selected three painters, who came and gave estimates, she managed all the back and forth via email, which was so helpful. We chose the paint, and Valia was able to be onsite to project manage the painters, give them access, inspect their work, and make important judgement calls in my absence. THIS WOULD NEVER HAVE GOTTEN DONE WITHOUT VALIA! Valia is highly organized and showed me various light fixtures from which to choose, hardware for the kitchen cabinets, and was completely collaborative on choices. Valia found all of the other skilled professionals: electrician, installer of curtain rods, and coordinated meetings to just get the work done. Valia has great taste and came with ideas that I felt I could reject or explore in more detail. She is a tremendous partner and does so much of the heavy lifting. If I had known this process would have been this easy, I would have done this refresh years ago!!

Valia Simonson is a dream to work with on all levels. I love living in a well-appointed home, but I don't have the eye or head for design (and frankly... kind of hate the process because I'm bad at it). I've worked with other interior designers in the past and it was a miserable and expensive experience... until we worked with Valia. She has vision, she LISTENED to what we want, and she has a process that makes everything fun (and feel like a partnership). Oh, and she is an absolute pleasure to work with (I almost want to buy another home so I can work with her again... LOL!) Do yourself a favor and hire her!

Valia was wonderful to work with. I told her what I was looking for and she came up with a great redesign I hadnt considered. She reoriented my desk to face the window and added blackout curtains, giving me several extra feet of space and allows for an extra drawer. The office feels so much more spacious even with the new additions. I love it so much. She had the deliveries all prepared as I needed a single day turnover for everything (painting walls and trim, new furniture, light fixture, etc.). I highly recommend many times over!

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I work with the client to ensure that their budget needs are met. I have several different price tiers depending on the scope of the work. I will only give a bid once I can actually see the space. I am a Project Manager by trade and definitely use that methodology for my interior design work. You will always be updated in real-time of the budget and timeline which alleviates any surprises.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I like to have a call to discuss the clients' needs, budget and timeline. After the call, I do a complimentary site visit to see the space, discuss ideas and pricing. Once booked, I create mood boards to get feedback and confirmation of vision.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

My mother is also an Interior Designer, so pretty much grew up in it. As an adult, I started purchasing investment properties and would always go for the fixer-uppers knowing I can make them shine with minimal cost. After my 3rd personal renovation, a friend of mine hired me to do her home and essentially started my career. I quickly realized there was a need for an affordable interior designer.
