Janet and her team did a move-in cleaning for us. The work is outstanding. Every corner is clean, every drawer is thoroughly wiped out, every window sill is dirt-free. I am very impressed with Janet and her team. Our new home is spotless. The price was unbelievably reasonable, also. I could not be more thrilled. We plan on using Janet for all of our cleanings going forward.

Exceptional!! This was the first time Solis Building Services cleaned for us. Rigoberto and his father, both very professional and lovely to deal with, came to view the house on a Saturday (to accommodate my work schedule) and we talked about the scope of work we wanted done. A proposal was given on the spot. The initial cleaning was a deep clean as I had spent my weekends (work full time) in the garden for weeks and the house had been shamefully neglected for longer than I will admit to. I was at work when they cleaned so I don't know how long it took them and the result is what is important, but my husband said 4 people came and he believes it was all done in about 2 hours (he left once they got there). Very efficient especially given the state the house was in. The result was far, far beyond anything I had expected. My normally disinterested husband even posted a note on the front door (as a joke): "DON"T TOUCH ANYTHING! IT'S CLEAN!". They cleaned the windows and slider door inside and out as well as the tracks. Hadn't been done in a year and the result was spotless! Old English lemon oil was used on the furniture. The slate kitchen floor was scrubbed to perfection. The (many) picture frames were all dusted and even the coffee pot was shinier than new. My husband has a bad habit of throwing all his shoes into a pile and they even lined them up in the closet. That they would take such care really impressed him. The top of the bathroom tissue roll was even formed into a rosette, a professional touch that again showed how much they cared and take pride in the details. There is not a thing I can imagine they could have done better. Again, they far exceeded any expectations and it is impossible to list here everything they did. We've hired them to come bi-monthly (just the 2 of us so we don't really need weekly cleaning). I so look forward to coming home after a hard week's work and being presented with the gem of a really, really clean house. Oh, and their rates? Amazing. If you need, or are considering, hiring someone for housekeeping, call Solis first. there just can't be anyone better out there. Rigoberto, I can't thank you, your father and your professional crew enough!!

Jenn is amazing! She did a move out cleaning on my old, gross house. Likely the best money I have spent. My kitchen was a congealed ball of grease, and I can lick the baseboards now if I really wanted to. She did the oven, fridge, washer, dryer, and all windows without charging extra. And offered to come back to redo the floors once I get the rest of my stuff out. I sort of love her a little!

I recently bought a fixer upper house that needed interior painting. I contacted JJ Doane and he responded to my e-mail within minutes. He set a next day appointment and gave me an estimate on the cost including some texuring that needed to be done over drywall repairs. He was able to start right away and completed the job on schedule. His attention to detail was incredible and the painting was craftsman- like in quality. In fact, at the final walk through, I couldn't find anything that required touching up. At all times he kept me informed of the progress and answered any questions I had. His pricing was very fair and I know he did somethings that he didn't bill me for. I have already scheduled his company to paint the exterior and stain the deck of my home in May. I highly recommend JJ Doane for any painting projection you need done!

Chris was great. He built me a new fence. Put a new fireplace in for me with beautiful quartzite. Put new doors and windows in. Remodeled my bathroom. And put in hardwood floors. He was very professional. Worked very hard. And I will definitely call him for any work I need in the future. His work was very good. Great attention to detail.

Our first experience with Troy was in 2009 when he worked on our bedroom extension and remodel of the master bath at our home in Grand Terrace, CA. The entire job took about 6 weeks as we had to remove a patio and deck in the process. From start to finish, Troy was professional in his work and very easy to talk to and make decisions with. He did an excellent job with the framing and roofing as well as the installation of new bathroom fixtures and tile work, both in the tub area and the flooring. If there was something we questioned or asked to have done differently (i.e., taking back a bathtub to replace it with a larger, soaking tub), Troy was always accommodating and happy to do what we wanted. When that project was completed, Troy framed and installed a new deck and sidewalk in our backyard.Over the next four years, we had more projects that we called Troy for help with and he was always ready and willing to come take a look, give a bid, and tackle the work. We had him install attic fans in the house, make and install shutters on the front windows, and paint our house. The work was always done to our satisfaction and we miss being able to call him for work we'd like to have done as he is no longer in southern CA.We highly recommend Troy Malley as a professional handyman whose work is exemplary. Dago was prompt to give an estimate and very personable. He removed an old window on the second story and replaced it with a very heavy new one. He did this on the afternoon of the day he gave the bid. I couldn't be happier with the work and will highly reccomend him to my friends.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
