He checked for leaks from the tank to the heater, then did an air quality control on my heater. It was found the heater needed a good cleaning. The fume smell is gone now, after the cleaning. Thanks!

We had Zach here to look at the hot water heater and the same day service on his day off was great. He diagnosed the problem and explained so that I could understand. He offered to price out a new appliance for us and compare rates to locals and was honest. He also fixed another problem appliance with his great experience and knowledge explained what was going on with that as well. Definitely worth the call. It was easy to communicate and we appreciated the prompt service.

Erik has taken on the role of my #1 handyman. He is the guy I now call in case I need ANYTHING fixed or installed. He fixed my kitchen sink, replaced my bathroom sink faucets, fixed an electrical problem that he later found out was dangerous (thank God). He also fixed 2 of our toilets. In a few weeks he is going to fix my back door and weather stripping because the foundation settled and created a space in between the door and frame. Next year, he may be re-doing my concrete deck and making it look more decorative around the pool.

First, the folks that came were very personable. The job involved fixing some leaks in some copper pipe. I sent then a photo of the work to be done and they assumed from that photo there was PVC and not copper. They did not bring any copper fittings or pipe to repair the problem. Upon arrival they spent over 15 minutes outside the home discussing how to repair the pipes in question. Their charges of $65 per hour For a two man team was very reasonable however spending that much time outside the home and not doing the actual repair made me feel a little overcharged. I was going to attempt to repair the pipes myself and so luckily I had purchased all of the necessary materials to do the job. I had purchased solder, paste, and half-inch copper pipe, And solder fittings, none of which they brought. They were very careful not to track dirt into the home. They did introduce me to some newer technology regarding splicing half-inch pipe without the need for soldering and for that I'm appreciative....but they also lacked some basic tools necessary for performing the job which included A copper pipe cutter. Again, I had the tools on hand so the job could be completed. I would rate their overall performance as good despite the concerns I have listed above. I would hire them again, however I would be more specific about what needs to be done before they show up.

Project: • Complete Bathroom remodel. Gut to studs, remove a small closet partition. Planned Additional: • Install a hot water heater and configure the natural gas plumbing as required • Install a natural gas dryer and configure the natural gas plumbing as required • Hardwired smoke / CO detectors on every floor Unplanned additional: • Structural assessment and installation of a header to carry the weight of free hanging rafters from previous owners remodel. • Upgrading the houses mainline for the plumbing system from ½ to ¾ pipe. (Hot and cold water) Small on the spot fixes FoC • Stuck door repair – fixed several doors that were binding in the house. • Helped remove the dishwasher for servicing • Helped install / repair 2nd bathroom hardware • Helped unload my truck a few times as I was moving stuff over from my apt. Bill and the crew at Freehold Enterprises are nothing short of phenomenal. They have given me a quite high end bathroom for a bargain price, while making sure all the systems and services are safe and up to code. Insured? – Yes, and he had his Insurance Agent email me over proof of insurance within 30mins of it being requested. Courteous?– without fail throughout the entire job. Ethicial and moral?- without a doubt. He is upfront and bluntly honest. He lives the Holmes on Homes motto of “Make it Right” and “Just like I’d do it in my own house.” Communication? – while I was away on vacation in Singapore, he kept me up to date on the projects progress weekly sending me multiple pictures and kept me apprised of any issues. Cleanliness / Concern for the Non work areas – Bill papered and plastic’ed what seems 3/4s of the house in order to avoid any possible scratches to the hardwood floors or dust getting places where it shouldn't be. Any minor cosmetic damage that occurred during his work he made sure were made good; such as pressure washing the back patio where he was working and touching up the trim paint damage from his tape. The project detailed ripping out the existing ½ bath and bathroom closet for the installation of a shower and full bathroom remodel. There was an additional constraint that we would be out of the country for two weeks and wanted the project done while we were gone. Bill contacted me through Thumbtack and was courteous and detailed in his phone survey of the project. He was punctual in his arrival for the on-site job survey and he impressed me with his knowledge and willingness to work with our requirements and budget. We had our written and itemized estimate in hand 3 days later. After reviewing all collected estimates we chose to go with Bill and Freehold. That evening we met at home depot and decided on a color pallet and hardware styles. During the conversation and listening to Bill describe how he planned to stretch our budget, we decided to go ahead and give Bill full design control. The end product did not let us down. We gave him key and went off on our trip. While we were gone, Bill sent us continuous updates with photos explaining what was going on. He handled and repaired several unplanned for issues in stride and kept us updated on those; the header and house leveling for the unsupported rafters and the need to upgrade the mainline for the plumbing. Along the way he handled several other minor things as they came up; some stuck doors, installation of hardwired smoke detectors and some lights, etc. Due to both the planned and unplanned extras, we ran slightly over on time and budget, and had to move in while Bill was still finishing up. He worked with us to create minimal disturbance to our lives and routines. The finished product was worth the wait. His tile design and choices were gorgeous. The bathroom is beautiful and now out classes the rest of the house. We love it. Then to top it all off, since we had gone slightly over budget he was willing to work with us on the final payment. We highly recommend Bill and Freehold for your next project and plan to continue using him ourselves for additional projects on this and other properties. Feel free to contact me with any questions regarding this review and project: Sincerely, Jason Emans

I contacted several companies about replacing a broken hot water heater. E.W. Tompkins had upfront & reasonable pricing (no "service call" fee to come to my house to give me an estimate like some other outfits), very responsive representatives who answered all my questions in advance. They scheduled for the next day and showed up on time (early, actually!), provided their red-carpet service and cleaned up nicely. The whole job was completed quickly. I will definitely hire them again!

Fabulous people to work with. They went to repair a faucet and notified me that my tenants had a problem they had not brought to my attention. There was a pipe that had frozen and there was hot water running to melt it. Unfortunately, the sink gasket was not working so it was leaking on the inside of the cabinet. He repaired the faucet and then set a date to come back to do the other job. Very reasonable. Tenants are very pleased witht he work. I will definately be getting more work done by this man.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

    • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
    • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
    • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

How much do new water heaters cost?

The cost of a new water heater depends largely on the type and size of the heater. The average national cost for a new water heater installation including a 40- to 50-gallon tank is $350-$780. Most homes don’t need larger tanks, but they are available — for a price. The average difference between a 50-gallon tank and a 75-gallon tank (the next most common size) ranges from $400 to $600. Hundred-gallon tanks are also available, and they can cost double or triple the price of a 50-gallon tank from the same manufacturer. New water heaters tend to be far more energy-efficient, so they can cut energy costs; homeowners may also be eligible for a new water heater rebate from their local utility company.

Typically, tankless water heaters, which heat water only when you need it, cost more but can save about 25 percent of annual water heating costs, on average. They also lose only 5 percent of their energy compared with a tank unit’s 30 percent energy loss. Note, too, that a water heater with a tank has a life expectancy of 10 years, while tankless units generally last about twice as long.

The final expense to consider is a possible disposal fee to get rid of the old water heater; some companies include it in the price, while others charge an average of $35-$150.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
