- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have twelve years training in classical piano. Professionally, I am a singer-songwriter who has released two records and toured nationally. Additionally, I'm an EMMY-nominated composer for film, television and theatre. Because I have worked in a variety of musical capacities, I bring a wide range of material into my teaching practice. I believe that classical material lays a tremendous foundation for building technique, but also believe in developing practical musicianship, which includes learning theory, being able to work with charts, and fostering the listening skills necessary to play well with other musicians.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
Eleven years ago, I volunteered to teach at a music camp for young girls during my week's vacation from an administrative job. I realized that I was thrilled to get up and go to work and that I loved watching young people get excited about music. I enjoyed talking to other teachers about their pedagogical approaches and discovering new ways to help people develop their skills. A few weeks later I gave my notice and I have been teaching ever since.
