FAQs
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
During the first lesson, I assess what the student already knows so that I can tailor my lesson plans to their individual needs. I then create a long-term plan that involves work on sound, technique, general musicianship, and repertoire.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I received a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from the Eastman School of Music. I had to take 5 semesters of theory, 3 semesters of music history, 8 semesters of big band, 8 semesters of jazz combo work, and other composition/orchestration and group teaching classes. My Music Education degree also involved over 100 hours of observation as well as over 400 hours of field experience.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I first fell in love with the sound of the saxophone when I heard some David Sanborn recordings in my youth. I then fell in love with jazz when I was exposed to the music of Charlie Parker. I fell in love with teaching when I first experienced the joy of sharing a deeper understanding of music with one of my first students. My favorite part of performing and teaching music is, after acquiring a solid foundation of technique and musicianship, finding a way to express a unique personality through a given instrument.
