Introduction: I have been working as a teacher/coach in musical theatre, voice, songwriting and beginning piano/music theory in NYC for 20 yrs and in California for several years before that. Because I'm a performer as well, I bring a mix of vocal technique, acting and musicality to my voice and coaching lessons, which most teachers, who are usually only pianists, don't do. My students have gotten into the top arts schools and I work with all ages and from beginners to Broadway performers. I'm also a professional, award winning composer and songwriter whose songs and musicals are performed all over the world. I'm a member of the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop, where I honed my craft further and learned so much more about songwriting. I have a background composing in all styles of music, from classical to country to Latin dance. I bring many years of experience and a wide range of skills to my lessons. Also, I can be pretty funny, I've been told... I do try to bring humor and passion to my lessons. Learning and performing should be fun and fulfilling!

I've been studying voice with Lawrence for a few months now. I'm a complete beginner and had to start with learning to match the pitches that he would sing and play, which hasn't been easy for me. Lawrence is a patient and knowledgeable teacher, and with his help I'm progressing well and getting better and better at it. Lessons are fun, actually, and I'm excited to keep working with Lawrence ad progressing further. I would highly recommend him with no hesitation!

After, what seemed an eternity of, looking for a new vocal coach, I started working with Lawrence a few months ago. Not only did he correct the "mistakes" I have learnt during previous vocal training, but also he understood quickly what my the potential of my voice could be, which was previously mislabelled. Am now singing from a register I could only dream of singing in previously. It is hard work and focus sometimes, but Lawrence really is such a great support. And not to speak of my pitch, which has considerably improved. Honestly, I am so glad to attend the classes and am always looking forward to the next week ! For those looking for a sensible, and very experienced musician, singer and coach, I would recommend giving him a try.

Lawrence's knowledge of vocal technique is extraordinary. I hired him to music direct for us at Brooklyn Children's Theatre and he has taught for us for five years. He is wonderful with children. He is attentive and kind and has numerous tricks up his sleeve to bring out the best in his students. One of Lawrence's greatest gifts is as a song writer. He has written numerous musicals for us and is the king of power ballads that make you cry. Our students love working with Lawrence.

Thank you so much, Amy! I love working with them...and for you, too!

Lawrence helped me with vocal auditions for performing arts schools. He helped me pick my piece and rehearse it. Happy to say I was accepted to both a performing arts middle school and high school in NY.
Lawrence Rush's reply
Thank you so much, Julian! So proud of all the great work you've done and for getting into both schools! Bravo!!

Lawrence Rush is an inspiring and gifted teacher. My daughter took her first musical theater class with Lawrence when she was nine years old at the renowned Neighborhood Playhouse in NYC, and she has been a dedicated student of musical theater ever since. Lawrence created an atmosphere in class that was safe, fun, and joyful, and he made the kids feel that no idea was a bad one. Among the many classes that my daughter took with Lawrence, she particularly loved the elective where her class wrote and acted in their own original play. Lawrence managed to lead his students through a process that was both rigorous and exhilarating, culminating in one of the high points of my daughters young life. I am also an arts educator, and I know a gem of a teacher when I see one. Lawrence is truly one of those rare teachers who leave a lasting, deeply positive impact on children, and I could not recommend him more enthusiastically.!

Thank you so much, Miranda! You know how much I adore you both and how I've enjoyed...and continue to enjoy... working with Ruby. It's been a joy to see her continue to grow musically and vocally through the years and to know how much she enjoys it. Thanks again!

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I do offer discounts with lesson packages. I still require payment if student cancels a lesson under 24 hrs before the lesson. Before 24 hrs, no problem.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I like to talk a bit with the customer....find out what experience they have, what they would like to achieve and, if a singing lesson, hear them sing a bit so I can get to know their voice and see what we need to work on as well as choose material to work on. We may then just do a couple of exercises to start so they can see how I work. In songwriting, I like to get to know what styles of music and lyric-writing they like and we'll start by talking about the different kinds of song structure and come up with a theme to start writing a first song using the simplest structure first.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a Bachelor of Music degree Cum Laude in voice/opera from California State University, Northridge, a very well known school for opera that several famous singers have come out of...Carol Vaness, for one. Singing experience...soloist and full time chorus member of the San Francisco Opera, roles in many operas and musicals with many companies, soloist with the Los Angeles Honor Choir and a member of the Young Americans show choir...both when I was in high school. A member of the Grammy winning Gregg Smith Singers, a group specializing in new, modern choral music. I've sung at Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, many jobs singing with churches and synagogues. As a songwriter, I won a Drammy award (Portland, OR's Tony Award) for composing original music for the musical, "Under the Influence". I was twice a finalist for the Richard Rodgers Award for 2 other musicals. My musical adaptation of Pride & Prejudice has had productions throughout the US and in the UK, was on the radio as a radio play last summer, and a concert at 54 Below in NYC with Broadway stars. I was commissioned to compose music for the torch lighting ceremony of the 2018 Empire State Games and "Transitions" for piano was performed at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. I've written over 300 songs (music and lyrics), several musicals, lots of choral music (Shalshelet award for "Sim Shalom") and art songs and studied songwriting and composition at UCLA and the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop in NYC. As a teacher, I've worked the last 20 yrs with TADA!, Brooklyn Children's Theatre, STEPS on Broadway, The Neighborhood Playhouse among others, teaching singing, acting and songwriting.
