Hired on Thumbtack

I contracted Van Sant Construction Company to remodel my kitchen, put in a new half bath off the kitchen, and make kitchen cupboards. He did a wonderful job making the cupboards; However I would NOT hire him again. He was at my home for 81 days, rather than the 6 weeks he said needed to complete the job. He gave a litany of excuses: "I have to wait to get my license back, My truck's transmission went up, my car has to get registered, my this, my that..." PLEASE this was a business agreement. I'm a paying customer. His "Crew" consisted of only "one" female, when she actually came. No wonder the job took so long. This relationship affected his job performance. creating a roller coaster of delays, costing me time and money. Additionally, half way through the bathroom job, he informed me that laying the floor wasn't included in the proposal, and I'd have to pay him additional money, The floor was only 3x6! What contractor doesn't include a floor??? Mr. Van Sant worked on rewiring my kitchen, removing knob and tube as necessary. When he was done with the wiring, my bedroom closet above the kitchen, and the front porch light no longer worked! The light he put in over my kitchen sink wouldn't shut off, it glowed even when the switch was in the off position. He denied any culpability, so I had to hire an outside electrician to fix his mistakes. The electrician's opinion on the wiring, was "Do the math, if it worked before he touched it, and now doesn't, he had to do it." I think the most frustration factor is Mr. Van Sant doesn't listen and talks over the customer. He NEVER accepts responsibility for his errors and won't fix them. The more I pressed Brett to fix these issues, the more condescending and non-committal he became. My final rant: when remodeling the kitchen, he stripped my walls down to lath and plaster. He measured and built a recess for the refrigerator to slide into. He went with me to Lowe's to select the refrigerator. When the refrigerator finally arrived, he slid it into the space he created, BUT we could not open the frig's french doors without it hitting the wall, defacing both the new wall and refrigerator door. I had to pull the refrigerator out 12 inches to open the door! Unacceptable. He would not accept responsibility nor fix this situation either.
