Ilya is the epitome of an educator. In conjunction with his amazing attention to detail, he makes the lessons fun and exciting. I appreciate his timeliness, responding to my texts (even at late hours haha) whenever i’m stuck on a concept. Specific to his abilities (in my experience), I found the following inspiring to witness - his;
(1) left hand technique
(2) improvisational vocabulary
(3) walking
(4) sound (go hear him play live if you can!)
Personal to my experience, Ilya helped me gain confidence in improvising past the half position, develop an effective practice routine (especially integrating transcribing), provided great jazz history insight and also provided me reassurment in my ability as a bass player which is very important.
