Tomo graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, and has been a professional musician based in New York City since 2015. He has released three albums as a bandleader and has toured throughout Japan and the United States. He has performed at renowned venues including Smalls Jazz Club, Minton's Playhouse, and Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Tomo's teaching journey began at the age of 13, when he gave his first paid drum lesson to a six-year-old girl. That early experience sparked a passion for teaching that has stayed with him ever since. Over the past 21 years, he has taught students of all ages and skill levels, from complete beginners to experienced musicians.
He understands that playing the drums can seem intimidating at first because you're learning to coordinate all four limbs. But he always tells his students, "One day it will feel as natural as riding a bike."
His lessons are patient, encouraging, and tailored to each student's goals. Whether you want to learn your first beat, prepare for auditions, improve your groove, or develop your jazz vocabulary and improvisation, Tomo will help you enjoy the process while building solid fundamentals.
Lessons are available at his home studio in Washington Heights or at your home or rehearsal studio by arrangement. Online lessons are also available.
