Katherine is undoubtedly one of the most dedicated, talented, and hard-working individuals I have ever had the pleasure to know. She has such a deep passion for her art and this passion translates into careful, inspiring instruction as well as truly moving performance. I have seen first-hand how she inspires the musicians around her - aspiring, beginning, and conservatory-trained alike.
Katherine is highly professional and a true joy to work with and watch. Out of every performance I have seen her give (no matter the audience or venue), not once have I seen her lose focus or give less than her best. Audience members of all musical backgrounds come away from Ms. Althen's solo performances awed by her sound and presence; musicians and conductors who work alongside her in ensembles have only positive things to say as well, myself included.
Most importantly, I have had the privilege of watching Katherine's current and former students improve exceptionally in their technique, artistry, and motivation. Several students of hers that were once causal players have improved so much and become so inspired that they are now realistically pursuing a career in music.

Katherine is one of the most talented and hard working individuals I know. While performing orchestral and chamber music with her in Boston, I was inspired by her artistry and dedication to the music. Katherines caring and enthusiastic personality made collaborating with her an exciting and enjoyable event. Her flute solos in a recent performance of Dmitri Shostakovichs Symphony No.5 at The Juilliard School were breathtaking and virtuosic. Getting the chance to work with Katherine has been one of the highlights in my career and an opportunity I hope others will be able to have as well.
