- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
3 Qualities to look for in a Personal Trainer: 1. Knowledgeable: When you have a problem with your car, normally you would seek out the service of a mechanic to help with your problems. The mechanic will then proceed to inspect you car and let you know what the problem is. Then, you just hand your keys and car over to him for him to fix. Think of a personal trainer in the same way. In many ways our bodies are like cars. We rely on them for transportation. They need to operate efficiently for us to get from A to Z, no matter the distance. Cars need fuel to run just like our bodies need fuel in the form of food and oxygen to function. Okay, thats enough of that metaphor for now. Any professional whose area of service is your overall well being needs to know as much as possible about the raw materials and resources available and necessary to see you reach your fitness goals. For example, our bodies have 640 muscles, however not all of those muscles are alike. There are 3 different types: cardiac, striated, and smooth muscle. Each is trained differently, but all three work together for optimal health. Major problems could persist if just one of those types is not functioning properly. Thats where the Personal Trainer comes in. Its their job to assess the situation, identify the problem, and then give you the information and assistance needed to correct that problem. Too many times Personal Training is viewed as a luxury service rather than a necessary, practical service. I have trained many doctors who have to have extensive knowledge to be in practice as a Doctor, however that knowledge is very specific to their immediate field. That is the reason why many Doctors will seek the services of a Personal Trainer, because their base of knowledge does not extend into the arena of fitness, and also because they know they need assistance with taking care of their bodies because Fitness Training is preventive in nature. So, if doctors commonly work with Personal Trainers, would it not be a good idea for you to reap all of the benefits of such a service as well? 2. Passionate: It is one thing to have the know how, but it is another thing to have the drive and desire to achieve success in any pursuit. A former member of the Navy Seals elite Team 6 said The will to win is more important than the skill to win. Interesting quote because there are few other elite military operatives more skilled than Seal Team 6. Lets compare the will to fire. Fire has always been a symbol of desire and passion. Although fire is not a necessity for survival, nothing can boost morale in a desperate and disheartening situation like the warmth, allure, and comfort of fire. Our wills are tangible through our emotions and intellect, but without friction or resistance they will never reach beyond the threshold of ordinary achievements. A trainer needs a surplus of desire and will power to first keep them fit, and an even greater amount of desire to apply to those who lack the will power to be fit themselves. When knowledge surges through the will passion is the result, and such passion for fitness is contagious and spreads like wildfire. 3. Personable: One of the best things that psychology has taught us over the years is the importance of matching ones personality to the right career. There is a reason why the most common word before Trainer is Personal when it comes to working in fitness, and that is because the trainer needs to possess character qualities that will ultimately help determine their clients success. A Personal Trainer is taking care of another, and any service where care is provided, care must be provided! Care involves having affection and empathy, as well as paying attention and taking responsibility over another persons needs. I base my success and my childrens success on our quality of character. We trainers are not drill sergeants, or merely instructors of one type or another, but rather we are tending to another persons body, as fragile and vulnerable as our bodies really are. Emotion will always play a part in success, and a pleasant and strong personality will see to it that the knowledge is applied passionately and personably to clients. In closing, there are many other variables that will help determine an excellent Personal Trainer. Over my years of experience in this field, I have found that these three are the most important of all. If one chooses the work as a Personal Trainer, it can be a very rewarding and enjoyable career if these three qualities are present. Thank you, now go
