FAQs
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
in 1979 myself and 15 other young men were all invited to assist with a 2 week long project at a moving company the job was sort out the orders of girl scout cookies for all the den mothers in the cincinatti ohio metropolitan area, the job paid 3.30 an hour.....at the end of the 2 week project, only myself and 1 other individual showed we had the intelligence to get every order fully correct, deliver every cookie to the right house and on time...at the end of each day we had no extra cookies left on the truck no extra cookies left at the wrong houses...and went 2 whole weeks without stealing or eating 1 cookie...a week after that job was complete the management of the moving company were so impressed, they asked myself and the 1 other guy if we wanted to work at the moving company on a full time basis (moving real furniture)..and offered a whopping 5.00 an hour to start....I accepted, and have been in the business ever since
- What types of customers have you worked with?
1 and 2 bedroom apartments I come alone typically and do the bulk of the move alone, and I have the customer help with the very few 2 man pieces they may have, and I do a true flat rate quote, My structuring is differant than most moving service quotes IE: you dont need to pay for 2 movers unless it is needed or you request 2, most moving services that are offered are based on hourly rates and quite often have minimums, and their quotes sometimes have hidden charges and their quotes are based on guestimates...the quote they give you could potentially get higher by the time the job is complete
- Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
A few years back, I had to do the packing on a move job that the estimated weight was 37,000 pounds...The average large moving truck can hold an average of about 32,000 pounds..the company I was working for at the time asked me to wait around 3 days and pick up the excess items that the driver would not be able to get on the big truck, this is called an overflow. Now I was unwilling to sit around 3 days and wait on the biggest part to be finished loading. now having been in the business for 25 years I knew exactly what items the driver would opt to leave behind as an overflow (he is paid by the amount of weight on the truck) but I did offer to pick up the overflow before the big truck even arrived this was unheard of...but the company agreed and was pretty much at my mercy thus I loaded the entire garage contents, all the patio/yard furniture, all the wicker furniture, and all the sofas...my total weight was 7000 pounds. the big truck loaded everything else remaining, got everything loaded, and had a total weight of 34,000 pounds
