Very trustworthy. Mike saved me a visit and money by giving me simple fix-it ideas for my refrigerator over the phone. Afterward, I brought him in for a different job and felt very comfortable with his service. Clearly he is an expert at his craft. The next time I have a home repair issue he will be my first call.

I have nothing but positive things to say about my experience with John Mullinax. I needed my Plasma TV mounted securely above my fireplace with the cables concealed in the wall. Out of the 5 quotes I received, John’s was the most reasonably priced. When John showed up at my house for the installation, he was very friendly, professional and just a very knowledgeable guy. I had purchased both a TV wall mount and an A/V wall shelf for my cable box, etc. The TV mount came disassembled, but he assembled everything and had my TV mounted on the wall in no time with the wires concealed in the wall and going down the side of the fireplace in a neat bundle. He told me the A/V shelf I bought wouldn’t really work for my setup and suggested I buy a better one—he even offered to come out a few days later to install the shelf after I bought it. When he came back to install my shelf, he ran into some difficulty with the sheer amount of equipment/cables I had (no fault of his own), but he still managed to make sure everything was secure and looked neat and tidy. Overall, he treated this installation as if it were for his own house and made sure that everything was to my satisfaction before he left. John has a great work ethic and genuinely cares about customer satisfaction. I will definitely be using him in the future for any installations or repair work. Thanks, John!

Mike and his assistant were on time each day, kept to the promised 2-day schedule and price quote, did a great job -- you now cannot tell the walls of our foyer were ever papered -- and cleaned up when they were finished. Also, he was able to repair a dent & small hole in the upstairs hallway before painting, and last, he provided a separate quote and returned to repair some minor water damage in the ceiling of one of the upstairs rooms. We would not hesitate to use Mike again. And the price for his work was fair & reasonable.

John was very responsive to my initial request and able to schedule plumbing work right away. I found him to be kind, honest, fair and helpful. He arrived early and stayed until he was certain the job was complete and done right. He took the time to show me how some things worked so that I would be able to correct future problems myself. I will absolutely be calling him again.

Ramone was very professional. We were able to get in contact with each other and schedule an appointment with ease. The job ended up having to be a little more labor intensive than originally expected and Ramone was able to troubleshoot and find the issue immediately. After the repair was complete, my tenant called to let me know that Ramone was polite, on time, and was willing to explain what needed to be done. I look forward to using him with my other rentals in the future.

I am a real estate agent and I initially hired Eric to help complete after inspection repairs on a home I was selling. He was prompt in his response, showed up when he said he would, and most of all made everything extremely easy. He assessed what he needed to be able to do the job properly, went and bought the materials and did really nice work. Seems simple enough but this is so rare in this business! I have since referred him to my aunt, my elderly grandmother and my own mother who have all absolutely loved him and experienced the same professionalism that I did. Exceptional! I will most definitely hire again.

I recently had a new driveway, sidewalk and 10' x 20' pad behind my garage installed by Safe Guard Renovations. Dave Rogers, the owner of the company is a young ambitious professional. I was skeptical at first because he had only been in business for five years but there is no doubt that he had been exposed to this trade for many years prior. Dave employ's true tradesman, his main concern was to make me happy as the customer. The tear out, install and finish was done in three days. I couldn't be happier. I had some concerns and questions after the job was done and paid for, so I texted Dave and within five minutes he called me back. All is good. I would like to make mention of some of his guys as I said he has some extremely skilled tradesmen working for him. Mike, who was the senior of them all would spend time with me while I was micromanaging the project (getting in their way) and reassure me that the guys that were on the job know exactly what they're doing. Shane, is there master plumber who will repair, relocate and tie in all your drains and who also has an extensive back ground in the cement trades. Som, this man is a bull and will take charge of the cement pour and finishing, complete professional. There are many others but just can’t remember their names. Bottom line, I would recommend Safe Guard Renovations for your cement needs.

I was seeking an emergency roof repair as it was raining inside my house every time it rained outside. Nate responded quickly and came out the next day and made repairs. The price was reasonable for a emergency repair and he was honest and up front about the work to be done and suggestions for things that I may want done in the future. I appreciated his quick timing for the repair and his honesty, and not trying to upsell. I would absolutely use this company again.

Very pleased with Make a Deal Painting. I built my home 12 years ago and their work was excellent beyond anything I could have imagined. They are professional, experienced, and when asked for an opinion it was better than the color schemes used by the original builder.I admit to being "old school at age 65" but this company did not fail in any area, job preparation, skill and respect within my home was exceptional. The responsiveness to detail was unquestioned, prior to leaving the crew took it upon themselves to sand and refinish a door not included and at no additional cost because, "it would be noticeable that the door was not included" and I was just awestruck...I pride myself on being able to pick out half ass from real craftsman..these guys are truly great and I urge their bidding your work.....

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
