We had AJ install a new whole house attic fan. Although it was a replacement, we still felt better having someone do it for us. We were glad we did because there were a number of problems that came up which AJ solved. Very glad we hired him.

We were very pleased with Michael's installation of our kitchen tile backsplash and concrete repairs to the house's foundation. He made sure he was doing things the way we wanted and kept us informed of how he'd go about the repairs. He worked the whole time he was here and tried to save me money by using some of his own materials. He's an honest person and I could tell from our conversations that he's a dedicated family man. Will definitely use him again and for my elderly mother's home, too!

Outstanding PLUS... Don is great to work with and makes sure it's done right, not just what I ask for. I wanted outside outlets and a new barn light... he did the work plus extra maintenance and cleanup to make sure it was code perfect! He educates me first to get my OK, then performs the work efficiently and completely. He cleaned up a real mess a past contractor had left me with! I'm already making a list for other projects with Don.

I have employed Tom's Building Services for more than 5 years. On my personal home, he trim painted, installed h2o heater, bailed out a roofing contractor that didn't properly flash a chimney, tuck pointed, built hand rails on the deck, installed leaf gutter protection. He has also successfully completed electrical, plumbing, soffit repair, pressure washed and painted gables, on our rental properties. Tom is a talented , honest craftsman.

My retaining wall was crumbling and I was looking for someone to either repair or replace the wall. Nate replaced the old, crumbling, stucco wall using beautiful pavers. I am very pleased with the work and would recommend By Design.

Stamper Concrete was quick to respond with a quote and was willing to negotiate a price. They came out quickly to do the job and worked hard. Time will tell if the concrete is withstanding but at this time I certainly would recommend his services. As for other contractors: I was disappointed in the response from your referrals and Angies LIST. Some never did reach out. With all the contractors out there none of them want work or are willing to reach out to clients? THEY SHOULD REMEMBER I TOOK TIME TO PICK THEIR SERVICE OVER OTHERS TO SOLICIT THEIR BUSINESS. Guess they dont care.

Brad and his staff delivered as promised and we couldn't be more satisfied with their work. Our basement was completely and professionally remodeled and Brad worked with us every step of the way including changes that we wanted to make during the process. They also made it a point to clean up each day and respected our home which is a nice touch if you have had other contractors that didn't do this in the past. I would highly recommend Brad and Alhi to anyone for any construction needs. Easy and professional to work with and there are no surprises.

Crossway Construction did an excellent job. We hired them to install flooring and trim work though out our house. Josh and his crew are very hard working and trustworthy contractors. We are very impressed with the work they did. They completed the job ahead of schedule and for a fair market price. I would be comfortable recommending Crossway to my family and friends.

Chuck and crew did a fantastic job on my 30+ year old deck. They power washed (and snuck in washing the deck furniture) before staining. This project will give me several additional years with the current deck -- I appreciate it's prolonged life. Deck came out as I was told it would, great value for the work. The crew was on time and very professional. I was called daily for a progress report. I would definitely use CPR again for any future projects. Great team!!

The name of the company says it all! We bought our home about a year ago and have had some hard times with contractors. However, This company is amazing! Devin and Nick have almost completed an over 300 square foot deck in around 13 hours. I will add photos once completed, I would recommend this company to anyone!! Look them up online and get service the way it should be! They rock!

Thompson painting (James ) painted a large powder room and bathroom and an accent wall in our master bedroom. In addition he ended up doing extra things like moving some furniture and filling in some cracks around my tub and other problems that we had. I give James the highest recommendation. He is a great painter takes great pride in his work he is kind and trustworthy and we liked him so much we convinced him to have some spaghetti for dinner after a very hard days work. We will definitely call him again as needed and he's even coming back to finish some little odds and ends in our home after the paint dries. Also he was helpful with paint color advise, and goes out of his way to do a good job

They were not the lowest bid BUT they were close and much more PRPOFESSIONAL, HONEST, HARDWORKING, POLITE, KNOWLEDGEABLE and FASTER than other previously hired contractor. They provided complete and detailed HIGH QUALITY work. Communication was excellent!! They were respectful of my service dog, my special needs, my granddaughters safety and were EXCELLENT in all aspects of work. WE LOVE THE complete bathroom, the finished basement recreational room, the floors upstairs they raised and put hardwood floors on to blend with tiled hallway. Stuck to the contract budget while also allowing some flexibility--quickly updated me on details/issues/time changes--and how my requested alterations would adjust the budget (I added a custom built shelving unit and had them move several large pieces of furniture--for an additional few dollars--a good value to me). Everyone who has seen there work are not amazed at the quality but surprised at the very reasonable cost----I cannot better express our appreciation for their help in getting our home back into shape and exceeding our hopes for our budget--than to say I hope to hire them again someday to do more work in our home! THANK YOU ADAM, CORY, and ALL THE COMPLETE STRUCTURAL PARTNERS--U R ALL GR8!!!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

      What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

      • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
      • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
      • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
      • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
