Ken contacted me immediately and came out to look at my electrical panel and told me what needed to be done. His price was extremely reasonable and he offered to let me purchase the supplies myself so I could use my credit card and my 10% off coupon I had for Lowe's. I ended up not needing the entire panel replaced because between the time he looked at it and the day he came to repair it, he looked for one part that he could replace instead and it only cost me $200 instead of the $800-$1000. That was a huge blessing! He was in and out quickly, came all the way to Hilliard from Newark in the snow, and was very professional and polite. I would highly recommend. I will use him for any future jobs.

I had Fraley plumbing and repair come in and repair some damage done to my home when a water line broke. He repaired my bathroom water line and at the same time I had him put in 2 new sinks and toilet. He also put in a clean out drain in behind my new toilet for easy access if it was to back up again. Job well done. Will call him back if I need something else done. Very pleased with his work and professionalism.

Bottom line, Mr. Napier is an old-school repair man. No frills, no overhead, no travel fee. Just a flat rate per hour for what you need fixed, he will repair it. For my repairs I needed items fixed like a leaky shower faucet and leaky toilet shutoff valve, hardwiring a dishwasher into a non-plug-in connection, and laying adhesive tiles in a bathroom. After Mr. Napier arrived and assessed the specific materials needed, he made a list for me of the necessary parts and materials, so he proceeded to work on some of the fixes while I went to Lowe's. As he worked, he even explained how certain parts become non-functioning over time and what to watch out for to save yourself some money in replacing them. If you are not a handy kind of person at all and don’t know much about various home improvement materials and parts, it would be best that Mr. Napier first go with you to the home improvement store together and purchase the necessary materials so all of your repairs can be worked on straight through. I would hire Mr. Napier again.

Donna and her crew were on time, very efficient and friendly. They did a deep clean on my home. I found a few spots that were overlooked after they left, but on the whole, I'd give them an A+.

The owner of the electrical service, Doug Mix, replied promptly to my request. He made it clear that his schedule could be adjusted to accommodate my needs. Home where work was needed has multiple, unrelated housemates, all female. They were little to no help to Doug as he spent hours trying to unravel an electrical mystery that needed to be repaired and restored. Although the home built in 1908 had been rewired in 2006, apparently not all work done was up to code. Doug called me once in the middle of the work to let me know he was still in the exploration stage, but he was determined to find the problem. He eventually succeeded and took care of a few other electrical issues he discovered along the way. He was there for three hours, he charged me for one. His name, number and business information are now a permanent addition to my speed dial on my smart phone. Needless to say I would be happy to recommend Doug Mix and his company Majestic Finish Painting and Electrical Services to anyone needing electrical work done. Count me a satisfied customer! I want to leave the best review for Mr Vincent. I had him come out in November to build a white railing for my elderly mother. It has lasted throughout the winter months and has worked out perfectly for our mother here in Ohio and she just loves it! He is an extremely hard worker and wants to do a great job. He also help do some repair on her chimney which was an excellent job also. We are so lucky to have Vincent in our vicinity. Thank you Mr Lombardo!!

He leaves out yard looking wonderful, He even works on little details (edging, grass in-between concrete, ect) Always cleans up neatly when done. Every time he comes to our home he always is very polite and respectful. we have a spot on the side of home that has a bench and is mulched around and during our spring clean up, after he finished with the section it just made the whole house look amazing from the outside. He took the time and treated our yard has if it was his own.

Becki and Megan did an awesome job refinishing our bedroom furniture and an antique rocking chair in a few short weeks. Becki gave me updates every few days so we knew how it was going and when we might get our furniture back It feels like I have new furniture! They also picked up and dropped off the furniture to/from our home. It's very heavy furniture. There is no way we could have done that ouselves. Very friendly and a pleasure to work with.

Johnathan was prompt, offered to give us a quote, or do the repair on the spot. We chose the later and got it done! Not at all sure of the value; the minimum for a job was $250. But I for one, was NOT going to get up on the roof and do anything. Glad he did it!

My husband and I finally decided we wanted to remodel our bathroom and Mr. Cox surpassed my expectations with his sense of style, craftsmanship, unique creativity, and originality in his style. He was professional and completed the job earlier than our agreed upon date/time. He surprised me with his attention to details/color schemes/custom touch. We have hired Mr. Cox on four separate occasions; our bathroom remodel, interior painting of our 3 bedroom house including ceilings, doors, and trim), exterior paint on doors/shutters/mailbox/hardware and gutter cleaning/repair, and about a month ago he repaired and fixed our chain link fence around our backyard. He poured concrete for the posts, moved the fence in from our property line about 12 feet to allow more room for parking in the alley, and distributed fresh gravel in the parking space. He is a talented young man and we are glad to know him! Thank you, Darrell!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
