Jim did a great job installing a new 250 V outlet in my basement! He is a rare breed of trustworthy, hard working person that provides his services at a fair price. He even took the time to let me participate and learn during the process, and he was a pleasure to interact with. I know who I will be calling if I need an electrician again in the future. Do yourself a favor and book Jim for your electrical project!

We started out asking for a quote to add a door to the mudroom of our new home we had just purchased. We also had some other projects in mind such as remodeling the master bathroom, updating the tub in the main bath and moving the laundry from the basement to the mudroom. Chuck was happy to give us a quote for all of the additional work and they were able take our visions for each project and make them all a reality. Along the way we also added to our project list and Chuck, Chris and team were able to complete all of the projects and many additions/changes to our satisfaction. If we were not happy with something there was no problem with changing it and they stand behind their work and will come back to fix something such as a leaky drain hose or clogged water line which is rare these days. We were so happy with all of the work done to our home that we also had them remodel my Mom & Dad's bathroom and add a 2nd bath to their basement. I have recommended Barnes & Sklare Remodeling to my friends and other family members as well. I would not hesitate to hire them again for future remodeling projects.

D3 Services painted my living room, main hallway, and hallway leading to the basement. I am very happy with the painting job that PJ did. He was very professional, polite, and clean. He did a good job of cleaning the wall before painting, and the job looked very professionally done. He did the painting very quick, and paid attention to details (the edges were very straight). I would highly recommend D3 Services to anyone looking to get some painting done!

Vlada remodeled our master bathroom and did an outstanding job. The design began with images my wife picked off and He was able to deliver a product greater than our expectations. He was timely, respectful and performed the work in a very "clean" manner. He was cautious to protect our house during the construction phase and kept things neat and orderly from start to finish. The communication was superb and we look forward to future projects with Vlada and his crew. He gave us ideas that we did not consider at first but turned out to be the best choice for our bathroom. We are glad we selected NEO for our project.

They ran a new 220 from my basement under the deck to the gazebo where my hot tub was. It was snowing and cold that day. They showed up right on time, they did a great job! Without a single complaint. I would definitely recommend them for any job you need.

James and his son went above and beyond my expectations! They were very professional. They were on time for both the quote and doing the work. They made sure everything was done well. They completed a whole list of things for me including installing garage door trim, a closet organizer, basement ceiling tiles, and closet hardware. They hung a mirror, towel bar, and curtain rod, fixed a broken toilet, and a few more items. Very satisfied!

Joe and his crew completed our basement in less than a month and we could not be getting more compliments on it. Including building a very unique bar which sits under our stairs, an office, a bathroom and a mosaic stone wall. We absolutely could not be happier and even more so, we could not have been more comfortable having Joe and his team in our house when we were out. Joe and his team were extremely polite and never made a single assumption about how we wanted things done, he asked us about everything and offered his suggestions and the reason behind them. I have referred Joe to a good friend and a client of mine since then and will absolutely use Operation Renovation for our next big project.

I hired Keith to replace a support beam in my basement. We had a detailed discussion regarding various options. He was also candid regarding his technical limitation regarding another support beam. The job was performed timely and professionally. I am very pleased with the results and would hire again.

Our basement flooded and we had Bell Construction come in to do the repair work after getting their name from our State Farm agent. Joshua, the owner, was very professional, personable and flexible as we had to change the original start date due to a death in the family. Prior to the work beginning we were give a thorough estimate of what the cost would be along w/ an explanation. The work included replacing dry wall and paneling, laying a CVT floor, replacing old switches and sockets as well as painting. We were pleased w/ his work and found him very easy to work with.

Keith is my general contractor and architect of choice for any of my home improvement projects. He is very conscientious of price and working within a budget while providing the most bang for your home improvement buck. He has no problems working with the home owner on design and budget to get you to your goal. I have used him on several major projects including a two story addition with basement, a partially covered deck and two basement remodels (the new basement and the original.) I highly recommend him.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
