Introduction: ***************Covid - 19 and Remote Tutoring Update*************** As of October I have reopened my office and I am seeing students both in-person and remotely. I have been offering remote services for a few years now but with everything going remote over the summer I have really dialed in my techniques. I use Zoom (or GoToMeeting if you prefer) and a digital drawing tablet in coordination with Khan Academy and PDF versions of textbooks and worksheets to help my students get the most out of our sessions. I always cater my session to the individual student's needs and typically assign homework each session to be completed before we next meet. I have digital tools to check for completion as well as give a detailed report of our progress. This in turn allows me to focus on the student's individual strengths and weaknesses . I have attached screenshots from my classes to help show you how everything works in practice, but please feel free to message me with any questions you may have. Lastly, due to the economic recession at the moment all new students who request it will start at my base rate of $50/hour. No matter the material. For "in-person" tutoring I am requiring students to wear masks as well as taking temperatures at the door. I have installed clear sneeze guards at the workspaces as well as a projector to display worksheets onto the whiteboard so that we can work on them. I am also making sure to clean and disinfect all workspaces between each and every students. I have uploaded photos to help show you all of the social distancing measures I am taking but please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. ***************************************************************************** My name is Alexander Maso, I am a Lewis and Clark Alumnus and the sole proprietor of Maso Tutoring LLC. I have built my own private tutoring business over the last 6 years and I have been teaching for just over 10 years now. I taught the SAT, ACT and SAT2s with Kaplan Test Prep for over 5 years and worked for in-school tutoring companies funded by No Child Left Behind as well as many other teaching and tutoring companies over the years. After years of teaching, I came to find that I enjoy the private "one-on-one" tutoring work most of all and set out to create a business of my own. I opened an office in Beaverton in 2014 and have been seeing students as well as working remotely from there since. I teach high school through undergraduate level mathematics and science classes as well as the HSPT, SAT, ACT and many SAT2s. Over the years I have come to developed a diverse range of methods for engaging different students but it always ultimately boils down to getting the student involved, even excited in their own education. I have come to believe that, while not entirely ineffective, lots of repetition, drills and dry memorization are not a very effective way to teach. We instead take time to focus on conceptual understanding and to link our current topic to past ones and even to things outside of the classroom. I believe in having a friendly relationship with my students and will always take a few minutes to discuss what is going on in their life. My goal is always to make our sessions as enjoyable as possible for my students; to make sure they feel comfortable asking questions or saying they do not understand. I have always found that good teaching is not only about helping to student to understand the topic but also about showing them they are able to learn anything if they are willing to show up, ask questions and put in the work.

Math Tutoring

Maso Tutoring was excellent. My son needed help with his Math Analysis Honors class and after the 1st class he was smiling and stated how he was finally understanding. My son said problems were explained step by step and he enjoyed working with Mr. Maso. His math grade improved. I'm so glad we found Mr. Maso. We would definitely use him again if needed.

Math Tutoring

I am studying for an entrance exam for Nursing School and have been out of High School for over 31 years..... I hired Alex to help me learn Algebra and some other Math skills on the test. He is AMAZING, he figured out a way to teach me the skills that worked for me, and drilled them into me. I feel so more confident and feel that I will do very well on the Math section of the test.

Alex Maso has been my tutor for over four years and helped me greatly throughout high school and is now helping me in college. I went from a student that was struggling in math to excelling in each math class that I took. He explains concepts perfectly and really cares about his students (i.g. reaching out to me even after the session to make sure I understood what we went over that day). He is also very flexible and is willing to add extra time slots during test times. I would recommend Alex to anyone that is struggling in math and needs more understanding of concepts that can be hard to acquire in large class sizes.

Hi my daughter has been working with Alex remotely for over a month now in AP Calc tutoring. He has been instrumental in basically teaching her the concepts as her online school teacher has not done this effectively. I cannot imagine what this year would have been like for her if we did not find Alex. He is also always willing to jump in for extra sessions when needed!. Highly recommend his tutoring services.

Math Tutoring

This review is long overdue! Alex was WONDERFUL with my teenage daughter! She struggled with college algebra and was ready to give up after hiring two tutors that didn't have the knowledge to help her. Thank goodness we decided to try Alex first! He was so easy to work with and he really understands how to teach in a way that makes sense to the learner. Paige successfully completed her college algebra class with an A and is so thankful for Alex's help! Thanks so much Alex!

Thank you for the incredibly kind review! Paige was a great student and a pleasure to work with. Glad to know that I was able to help and, if you ever need another tutor, I hope to hear from you again.

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

*************** Covid - 19 and Pricing Update *************** Due to the current economic recession, all new students will be at my base rate of 50/hour at this time. ***************************************************************************** I charge $50 / hour for all help with classes. Math or Science, as well as High School or College I charge $70 / hour or $100 / 1.5 hours for Standardized Test Prep. SAT, ACT, SAT2s, etc. I have all the necessary study materials for students to borrow (although some students may want to purchase their own book and keep it) I also am willing to give a discount when paying for a package of sessions. Please contact me for details if you are interested.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

When it comes to the format of our sessions, my tutoring classes tends to fall into one of two major categories: Test Prep tutoring (SAT, ACT, SAT2s, HSPT etc.) or tutoring to help a student through a specific class (this includes a wide range of high school as well as college, math and science classes). They each have their own unique process for working with a new costumer so I will describe them separately. When it comes to test preparation, we typically start by having the student complete some diagnostic sections for me (preferably while I am present) and/or by going through their previous test results. After I get a sense for the student, we all sit down and discuss the variables: the student’s strengths and weaknesses, which sections will be faster to improve and which will be slower, how much time we have for the prep and what we are looking for (in terms of a goal score, colleges etc.). From all that we put together an individualized plan. Over the years I have found that students can benefit greatly from an individualized plan, and that the topics we want to focus on for one student are not the same as for another student. In fact, this idea has become central to my approach to standardized test prep. Now, for most of the students who come see me for help with a particular class, we start by going over any recent class materials/assignments/tests that have been challenging to them. By starting here, not only are we able to immediately focus on what is presently giving the student trouble in class, but I am able to assess their strengths and weaknesses as we work through that material. From there we go back and address any missing "gaps" in their previous education that might be causing issues with the current topic. Some of my students only come for a handful of sessions in order to get through a difficult part in their class or to work through some mathematical “gaps” they have but many students set up a regular weekly session with me, in tandem with their class. This is so that we can discuss any new class material as it arrives to ensure the student really has a full conceptual understanding going forward.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

In high school I was very much drawn to math and science, especially physics. So, naturally, when I got to Lewis and Clark College I found myself pursuing a physics major. However, after a couple years at a liberal arts school that encouraged it’s students to take classes in all fields, I found that I was becoming increasingly interested in psychology. From there, my initial interest in psychology blossomed into a real desire to study the subject and ended with a double major in both physics and psychology. It is this desire to understand how the human brain works that has allowed me to become a successful teacher. In college, as I was going through my own education, I was also studying how the brain itself learns. It was during this part of my college experience that I came to understand the link between understanding what/why you are doing something and remembering it. I do not believe in teaching through drilling problems/blind repetition/flash cards etc. Instead, I focus a lot of my teaching on reinforcing a greater conceptual understanding of the material because I believe it leads to greater retention of the material.
