Introduction: I have over 25 years of living, handling, & training experience with man's best friend. I have a passion for what I do, and a knack for building trust in a dog very quickly. I'm told over and over "I can't believe it, this dog doesn't typically like: men, other people, strangers, etc." I firmly believe there is NOTHING you can't train a dog to do, if you are willing to spend the time, and break it down into small enough, achievable steps. I just plain love to be around dogs, but I also love seeing the reaction of the owners when they realize "my dog really can do this" or "I can have the dog I always wanted", without having to use harsh or aversive methods. Discovering what dogs are capable of is a gift every single day. Getting to share that gift with others is just icing on the cake.

Mike of Frayed Hat Dog Training comes with deep experience in dog training. He observed my pug, Chai’s, natural actions and uses various training tactics as we progress. Understandably, a great deal of training must go into the pet parent, and I have had to learn a lot, but having a happy, well-behaved pug is certainly worth the effort. Mike is a joy to work with, and Chai is becoming such a good dog!

Details: 2 - 10 years old • Small (16 - 25 lbs) • Private lessons • General obedience training • Barking • House training • Leash pulling • My home, venue, etc.

I enjoyed the support and insight Mike provided for my puppy. He took ample time in answering my questions and it was refreshing to work someone with the same level of respect and compassion for training dogs. I would highly recommended Mike to anyone needing guidance with your furry loved ones!

Mike is amazing. We've seen a significant difference in our dog (and my husband!) in just two lessons! Mike's not only teaching us how to best work with our dog but he's also helped us to better understand his breed. The training has been easier knowing why Boomer does the things he does. We can't recommend him enough.

Details: 2 - 10 years old • Medium (26 - 40 lbs) • Private lessons • Aggressive behavior modification • Biting • My home, venue, etc.

Frayed Hat Dog Training was very professional, informative, and used positive training methods with our dog. Our dog responded to him right away. I think our dog ended up with a little bit of separation anxiety after he left! LOL

Details: 1 - 2 years old • Large (41 - 70 lbs) • Private lessons • General obedience training • Leash pulling • Barking • Biting • Chewing • Destructive behavior • Digging • My home, venue, etc.

FAQs

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I start with a brief phone conversation or email to get some preliminary info, but then I always make an in-person assessment of the dog. This let's me see exactly what it is my clients are dealing with, and maybe some cues or signals from the dog they don't see themselves. After this I'll start to implement some training & behavior modification right there during the visit. From there I put together a personalized training program that allows the owner to affect & manage their dog's behavior themselves.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I am an Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer, with 10 years of professional experience with working Border collies, and about 30 years personal dog ownership/training experience. I'm always trying to add to my training knowledge by learning from other trainers as well, attending various workshops, seminars, and reading books & publications.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I've been a dog lover all my life and started out training my personal and family dogs (my Grandparents' Beagle at age 12). As I learned to develop my own style from established methods, I realized I wanted to make a career of it. That's when I took the Dog Trainer course through Animal Behavior College and got my official certification. I got an A+ rating from my instructor and was promoted to the Head Dog Trainer position at my job with Wild Goose Chase the same year.
